We first stayed at Dunalastair over Hogmanay 6 years ago. Our experience was so positive that we returned 3 years later and again, thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The requested 'cow free' diet for one of our party was taken seriously and catered for excellently.
At Hogmany 2007/8 we noted a marked decline in the standard of organisation and attention to detail.
Positives:
1) Staff team friendly, cheerful
2) Room pleasant, warm, nice view
3) Maid service excellent
4) Whisky tasting excellent
5) Crooked Jack excellent
6) Hotel environment warm and welcoming
Negatives:
1) Staff team new, inexperienced, lacking leadership/autonomy as the owner departed to spend Hogmanay with his family on New Year's Eve.
2) No welcome pack in room – 6 years ago, water & biscuits replenished daily
3) No questionnaire or other feedback facility offered
4) Hogmanay “ceilidh”: -
a) One glass only per person of Bucks Fizz (made with Orangina?) prior to meal
b) “Ceilidh” band consisting of one accordionist with limited repertoire & unable to ‘call’ the dancing (he told us he had only been booked 3 weeks previously and did not normally perform at such events)
c) Guests had to take initiative for organising run-up and count-down to New Year out in the square (6 years ago there were fireworks, a piper & a full ceilidh band)
d) One glass of champagne per person after midnight and none of the usual snacks offered to accompany this e.g. stovies, bacon sandwiches, even crisps etc. (One couple produced/shared a range of nibbles brought from their room/car)
e) After accordionist departed promptly at 1 a.m., there was no more music
f) The formal dress usually expected at a Hogmanay celebration was not identified as prerequisite, resulting in jeans and loose shirts being worn in some cases
g) A premature attempt was made to close the bar at 2 a.m. quoting licensing laws – happily, this was unsuccessful when residents pointed out they did not apply
5. New Year’s Day
a) Soup & sandwiches produced in an ad hoc fashion, no garnish, no finesse. Had to request (and wait for) sandwiches with Soya spread, even though reminder given and reassurance received at breakfast.
b) Advertised shoot did not materialise
c) Guests not informed about other local events e.g. Street Party in Pitlochry
Food
Although of a generally high standard and freshly cooked, service to individual tables was fragmented due to each dish coming from the kitchen in turn & served to all tables. This meant that if the people who had chosen the first dish waited for all on their table to be served, theirs was cold. If they did not wait, they had finished well before the last people on their table had even been served.
Despite being informed in June 2007 about the need for a ‘cow free’ diet with a telephone reminder on 28 December 2007, not even a token attempt was made to provide suitable alternatives as even many of the vegetaian dishes contained cheese. There was no offer to adjust either cooking methods or sauces to suit diet e.g. informed that the pan-seared duck and potatoes were cooked in butter, whereas olive oil could easily have been substituted. None of the desserts or the contents of the cheese board on offer was suitable, although fresh fruit and goat’s cheese provided on request.
Although Soya spread and milk were available, this had to be requested on every occasion (even though same seats kept for the duration of our stay). The spread was served in its carton at every meal apart from Hogmanay. The milk was served in a jug at dinner time. However, at one breakfast it was served in its carton and at another, in a cup.
The buffet dinner on New Year’s Day was a refreshing change as it included options such as smoked fish, salad and fruit salad but again, none of the hot dishes, other desserts or contents of cheese board were suitable.
In view of the cost of this 4-day break (£500 per person plus bar bill) we would expect more. Such a pity that previous positive experiences resulted in such a disappointment!
