The Birchwood is an excellent small hotel. Some other reviewers have noted that the decor is a little dated, and this is true, although it is very much in keeping with the character of the building itself. For example, I wouldn't have the wallpaper in my
house, but it's absolutely fine in a hotel room and it adds to the old-fashioned grandeur (I'm 33 by the way, I normally stay in designer boutique type places).
If you normally stay in big sanitised chain hotels you will not find the bathroom, TV etc up to your usual standards. However everything is immaculately clean and works properly.
The owners and staff are lovely, very helpful and friendly and they certainly make you feel welcome.
We didn't eat in the restaurant in the evening but the menu looked very good, and I have to say this is the best hotel cooked breakfast I have ever eaten. No huge portions, no unnecessary rubbish like baked beans or hash browns, just good quality ingredients cooked to perfection.
I can thoroughly recommend this hotel.
