“Enjoyed our stay”

Atholl Palace Hotel

Stayed for two nights in the Atholl Palace Hotel (Friday 6th April - Sunday 8th April 2007). I was a bit concerned regarding the reception staff at the hotel going from previous reviews but can honestly say they were very pleasant. On arrival at the hotel we were welcomed by the staff and offered a Glayva whisky to welcome us to the hotel. Our room that we were offered wasn't too great as we had air conditioning units outside our window but I went to reception and was given two sets of keys to go and check out these rooms and pick what we wanted. These rooms were an upgrade from what we had booked and had fantastic views - we were not charged anything extra for this. My only complaint would be the food. We ate in the hotel on the first night and was very disappointed with the standard of food. Our breakfast on the other hand was lovely and had no complaints whatsoever about this. All the staff were very pleasant in the hotel and our room was well maintained. We were booked in for a meal on the second night at the Old Armoury Restaurant and the food was absolutely delicious and would recommend that. Once again I would like to say that we enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to others but would eat elsewhere.

We stayed for a romantic weekend on 16th & 17th February 2007. On arrival we were amazed at the fantastic structure of this hotel, the drive up to the hotel is lined with trees and the view of the hotel from the driveway is wonderful, we even spotted a red squirrel!!

We were give a welcome drink on arrival and sat by the log fire and enjoyed before going up to our room. We had booked a special room and were given room 138. It had a four poster bed, corner bath and was beautifully decorated.

The pool and spa are very nice, don't forget your swimmies!

There was a wedding on Friday and Saturday and the atmosphere was wonderful.

We enjoyed the food very much, breakfast was a buffet, the views from the restaurant are to die for. Service at dinner was very good but not intrusive, James, the restaurant manager was very attentive.

After dinner we enjoyed ceilidh music which was in the lounge.

All in all we really enjoyed our stay, the location is beautiful, we will be back in the summer when I'm sure the grounds will look great.

“the intruder”

Atholl Palace Hotel

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights, just an small break after some bad news, we choose the turret suite as we were told they were the best, on arrival the hotel looked stunning and we could make it out from afar and were excited. When we were shown our room i must admit i wasnt that impressed with the 2 floor room, the furniture in the turret wasnt comfortable and the bedroom was seperate on the floor below. We were looking forward to looking at the 360 degree views which were spectacular but think the bedroom should have been that room as the bedroom was quite small and had just 1 small window. The food was excellent and the hotel interior was also of high standard with a lot of space and log fires throughout. unfortunatley for us on our last night we had an intruder who had opened the fire exit in the room above our bed, the intruder was actually outside our bedroom door until they heard us and escaped through the fire exit which was next to the 360 degree windows and escaped onto a small walkway. We phoned the reception as we were both stunned and shaken and the porter we spoke to told us not to worry it was probably someone "having a smoke" as he put it, but that was our room! The police were called and statements taken, the hotel staff dealing with this were ok to start but then didnt seem that interested after a while, obviously we didnt sleep that night as it was 5.45am when the police left. The next day we booked out and the hotel manager was going to telephone us at 3pm that day and now 2 weeks later we still have not heard anything! Going to such a beautiful looking romantic palace hotel was meant to be an experience never to forget and it was for all the wrong reasons.

After staying in this hotel a few years ago my wife and I were very much looking forward to going back. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds and has tremendous views of the surrounding scenary. The hotel reception staff were very polite and friendly and we were offered a complimentary drink before going up to our room. We were dissapointed with the room however which was not to the standard we remembered from our first visit. We were offered a change of room with no fuss at least although the rooms we were given to choose from were only marginally better. The evening meal was dissapointing (£21 for a lamb dish that was mostly fat) and the service was very poor. This hotel has the potential to be really good however until they sort out the food, service, finish of the spa facilities and upgrade the rooms I will not be returning particularly at the rates they are charging.

Like a previous reviewee we found the greeting and check in lacking, only one receptionist on duty and she was on a long phone call, not what you want after a lengthy journey! However, once we had her attention she was efficient and fairly friendly, but first impressions are so important. Our room had a nice valley view and was adequate but not very big. There was a hospitality tray but it wasn't replenished on the second day which was disappointing as we fancied a cuppa while getting ready for the evening.

The food, again, was Ok but nothing special and the service could have been better. There was a table d hote menu or you order from the a la carte and pay a supplement. The portions on the a la carte were more generous, but it was expensive for what it was. Breakfast was buffet.

The public areas are the best feature of the hotel, spacious with open fires and lovely comfy sofas upholstered in warm shades of red and gold. After dinner on the Saturday there was a duo playing Scots dance music which was fun.

As I said earlier, everything was OK, no reason to complain but no reason to return either.
