We arrived at the Carra Beag house mid afternoon in Apr, and were welcomed by the owner straightaway. After being taken around the common areas which were very tastefully decorated, we were shown our room, which was a bit disappointing. Being newly-weds, I had requested a room with a view. However, not only did we not get one without a view (which was fine), but an extremely small room with hardly any space around the bed.
Anyway, we decided to overlook this and make the best of it. Next morning, we were greeted by (we presume) the owner's wife who was very pleasant. Breakfast service was swift and courteous, but we didn't like the breakfast that much. Having stayed in a B&B in Edinburgh the night before where the breakfast was great, the food here seemed less impressive in quality in comparison. My husband opted for some fried bread, but he felt very unwell later on, and he had to rest and take some medication.
Negatives aside, when we returned that night from some sighseeing, we were pleasantly surprised to find some a port decanter and glasses laid out for guests in the common living room. My husband and I enjoyed a glass or two of port by the roaring fire, and loved it!
The next day, we opted for muesli and scottish oatcakes with cheese, which was nice and refreshing. The coffee served at breakfast is also delicious, by the way.
We would have written off all the previous gripes had it not been for one thing at the end. When the time came to settle our bill, we were told that they did not accept credit cards, but only cash or checks. We were not aware of this before, and luckily we had the money on us. However, we thought this was a bit of an inconvenience given that there are very few places around which do not accept credit cards.
In sum - a cozy, but very small B&B in a good central location, whose breakfast needs some improvement. Remember to take cash with you to pay the bills!
