“Love The Moulin Hotel”

Moulin Hotel

20 Apr 2008

We stayed at the Moulin Hotel for a short break last week for the fourth year running .As always we enjoyed the friendly staff, lovely food, great atmosphere and good value for money. Rooms are a bit too "tartan" for our taste but comfortable and snug. We know Scotland very well and have stayed all over. The Moulin compares very well to other small hotels. Look forward to a couple of nights there next year!

“excellent stay”

Moulin Hotel

Reading a couple of the other reviews, i can't help but wonder if we're talking about the same place.
If you are looking for a contemporary, anonymous-style hotel, then maybe picking an "inn" in such a charming town as Pitlochry isn't the smartest choice anyway!
A major part of the appeal of the place is that it DOES retain a lot of the old "quaintness", but in no way does this detract from the overall high standerds.
I find the hotel an absolute pleasure to stay in - a lobly combination of character, comfort and cleanliness. The staff, too, provide the perfect balance between friendly and professional.
I would go so far as to say the place has become a "home from home" .... with no pressures and better cooking!
The only fault i could find was that a friend's room could have done with a lick of paint, but this certainly was nothing to spoil their holiday. For myself, i couldn't fault my room.
The bar is lovely, too, and perfect to relax in, whether on a weekend's escape, or simply after a day's walking (the Moulin is a perfect, central base for that type of holiday).
I agree the main menu doesn't seem to change very often, but unless you're eating there a couple of times a week, every week, personally i can,t see that being a problem, as the large selection is both varied and interesting, whether a full-on meat eater, or vegetarian, and they all seemed to be done to an excellent standard.
The same can be said for meals in the hotel dining room itself, where the choice is even more extensive, and absolutely perfect, either for a special occassion, or just a quiet treat.
I returned 2 weeks ago from my 2nd stay at the Moulin Inn, and have already booked to go back the same time next year.

This is the 4th time we have stayed at the Moulin. We have been in the annex 4 times and I have stayed in the hotel twice with my work. I have never found the place to be dirty, in fact the bedding is all pure white cotton as are the towels.
This is such a bargain, where else can 7 folk have a 2 night stay in a lovely big house for £29 each. Granted we did our own breakfasts, but ate lunch in the bar of the hotel and had a carry out Indian from the town, which comes highly recommended.
When we arrived on Friday, we went over to the bar which was quiet when we went in but soon got busy with the locals coming in and the new arrivals and folk coming in from the hill who had obviously stopped in for a drink. The log fire was a welcoming feature and the smell of burning wood brought back memories of when we had coal and wood burning fires.
Remembering that his hotel and annexe are over 300 years old, I am sure a lot of people choose it for its character, I know that we do. If one is looking for a more luxurious hotel, there are other hotels in Pitlochry, it all depends on what you want. I really don't think that there is much to complain about, it always seems to be busy enough and that for me says that it is good.
Over the weekend we only had one wee problem and that was with the heating, buit when we asked to have it turned up the housekeeper came over and turned it up.
As regards the friendliness of the staff, I did not have any problem with them and yes they will speak to the locals as they are in there all the time. All in it is great to relax in and we girls all enjoyed ourselves. Working wives and mums who had a weekend away from it all. GRRRRRRRRRRRRReat.

We stayed at the Moulin Hotel about 5 years ago and had the opportunity of a night in the Pitlochry area so didn't hesitate to book again. We had a superior room with slightly dated decor but it was very spacious, warm, clean and comfy with a lovely deep cast iron bath with endless hot water.

We ate in the bar and had a very relaxing evening drinking the local real ale and enjoying the local food and conversations that we had with other customers. We were a bit dissapointed by the lack of fresh veg with our meals and the Verakie Grostel (a dish of sauted potates with bacon) was a bit bland, but there were plenty of choice on the menu so we would try something else next time. Service was efficient and our two border collies were made welcome and offered water by the waiting staff.

Breakfast (traditional cooked Scottish) was freshly cooked and quick to arrive with probably the best smoked bacon we have ever had.

“If you like good food, good real ale and are not a snob”

Stayed for 2 nights DBB and the deal inc flowers (at least £20 worth), bottle of champagne, 3 bottles of Athol Ale bottle conditioned, fudge etc in the room, free glass of wine with diner, liquers after diner on both nights. Breakfast was excellent.

The staff were very polite and professional but not overbearing. Nothing was a problem for them. The dining room ran very well and was busy.

The bar with its own real ales and cosy real fires is a treat in itself. Try finding a seat or coming in at the last minute and expecting to get a meal ordered is a long shot. There must be something about the place that brings back a large number of repeat customers.

To be honest I dare say the rooms could do with a spruce up but for a 300 year old drovers Inn I did expect the floorboards to creek and I didn’t expect double glazing. Admittedly the could be a wee bit new silicone added around the shower screen and the hose for the shower could be a tad longer but the rooms were clean and tidy and certainly fresh.

Did I enjoy my stay at a 300 year old Inn renowned for good food and real ale? Yes.

Did I expect a 5 star hotel? No.

Will I be going back again? Try holding me back.
