My wife and I stayed there for just one evening in second week of June and have the same views as Mr Duncan - perhaps over same week.
The room was nicely decorated (with 4 poster), very clean but with a couple of minor hiccups - shower if too high pressure causes water to go over edge and leak downstairs and little TV is a bit ugly. Location - a little out of town if you want to wander down the high street but only 4 minutes by car.
Best qualities were, however, the food and the service. Dinner was superb with a nicely varied choice of local food - I had a wonderful roe deer dish, as were breakfasts. We had great service from 3 young ladies - 2 being the daughters of the owners, one up from Edinburgh for the weekend to help out. If you have dogs this is great place as well with the owners being relaxed about animals.
I would definitely recommend the hotel to anyone, especially for a short break and even for just a splash out dinner/breakfast for those living in Edinburgh. We had a look at the nearby Atholl Palace which while wonderfully impressive grounds and building had very tired rooms (and smelly) compared to East Haugh.
