We arrived in Ayr late at night mid August on our way down to Manchester. We only had one day in which to see as much of Ayr and the Burns Country as we could before we had to move on. On the way down to dinner we picked up some brochures on Ayr and within these brochures was one advertising "Spend some time wi Rabbie". Given that our time was limited we gave "Rabbie" a call even though it was late at night.
We explained out situation and asked if, he Rabbie (Donald) could help. Donald explained that the following day was his day off however without hesitation he agreed to meet us the next day and show us around.
Well all I can say is that the next day was one of the best days we have had in a long long time. Not only did Donald have an incredible knowledge of his home town Ayr he spent the next six hours taking us through the life of Rabbie Burns both historically and also poetically. Donald quoted the poetry of Burns from start and finish and by the end of 6 hours we felt as if we were back in the 18th Century and that the "real" Rabbie Burns would be sitting in the corner of the pub writing one of his famous poems.
I know I have rambled on in my praise but both my wife and I cannot speak highly enough of this man and his desire to promote his home and country and we would be very sad if officialdom did anything to dampen his enthusiasim.
It would be Ayr's loss.
