“Disappointed in Cork”

Acorn House

We stayed here for one night at the end of April.
We chose this place because it was recommended in Lonely Planet, because it is so near to the centre of Cork and because we wanted to avoid corporate hotels. What we found was that it was very basic indeed. Our room was large with a bed , one folding chair and one bedside light.. Everything else was nailed to the walls! I asked for at least a second chair and a second bedside light and was told there was nothing available. On the good side the place was clean and the owners pleasant, but I really would not recommend this place to anyone.

“Only for the location”

We booked in here because of the Lonely Planet review and because of the location. Lots of little things wrong with it such as only one bedside lamp for 2 people, no soap, no hairdryer, inadequate towels, etc

The welcome was totally cold and indifferent, she didn't even bother to explain that we needed a parking ticket for the parking outside. As it turned out, luckily a passerby gave us this info otherwise our car would have been towed away.

Found it impersonal, although the breakfast was OK, and the cook seemed the cheeriest person in the place.

It was nice to be able to walk into town from there, and be close to restaurants etc. Would look for an alternative and stay there again only if there was no other option with similar location.

Having read the reviews, after I had booked the accommodation, I was worried, but there was no need to be. I found the hosts welcoming and very helpful. Breakfast was good, my room was very clean and bright. The location was also good. It was easy to walk to the bus station and a very short walk to the city centre. I felt safe in this hotel and after going out for dinner at night. This is very important to a female solo traveller. Overall, a great experience.

We previously stayed here two years ago so were concerned by some of the negative reviews, but decided to go ahead with our visit.

The guest house is very clean and the rooms are as well furnished as any chain hotel I've stayed in, with tea and coffee, rooms cleaned and fresh towels every day. Yes the shower did go off once, I guess in a old property the plumbing isn't always great, but it came back on within a minute, how come that's never an issue when you are in Greece or Spain.

The views from the back are of other properties, but if you explore some of the hotels in Cork you don't necessarily get more for your money. This is a city, what do you expect from a Cork hotel bedroom, The Hanging Gardens of Babylon!

The breakfasts are filling with cereals, fruit juice and a cooked irish with several rounds of toast and lovely soda bread and a tea or coffee.

Jackie was very welcoming and made arrangements to wait up for us even though our flight was arriving a little after the check in time. Our experience was that all of the guests whilst we stayed seem to enjoy a chat with the hosts.

The guest house location is excellent two minutes walk to the city, 5minutes from the local bus station and about 10 minutes to the train station.

There are great restaurants in town and also around the corner in MacCurtain Street. Down the hill and to the right are a couple of great bars Sin e and the Corner House, lively, great music and friendly.

Visit Cork and enjoy your stay at Acorn House.

“Good Value”

I found Acorn House via the Internet and although some of the reviews were a bit worrying, we decided to take the plunge for our short stay in Cork. However, we need not have been concerned. The guest house is brilliantly located within a short stroll of the city centre and we found it to be a friendly and clean establishment which suited our needs perfectly. A tasty Irish breakfast the next morning was appreciated by both of us and we found Charles and Jackie very hospitable. We thought it was good value for money and would definitely stay there again.
