Having just returned from the Burlington, it is such a shame it is being demolished, as we had such a great stay. It may not look great from the outside, but this hotel is first class.

Having checked in early, our room was ready which was great, the front
hotel staff where very friendly and asked what brought us to the hotel, having told them we were there for a special occasion, they proceeded to send up a free bottle of wine to the room. I can honestly
say I have never been in an hotel in which the staff have been so attentive. The staff have certainly not lost any moral knowing that they wont be working there much longer, they really are absolutely fantastic!

Rooms were nice and lots of variety on the TV. We were also on the 6th floor, the executive level that has previously been reviewed, and it was great to have free tea/coffee/biscuits/ water etc. We didn't stay on this level for breakfast as the surroundings of the Sussex room is so nice we opted to eat there instead. In addition the spacious lobby is an added bonus in the hotel, we sat and had drinks and some snacks there by the open fire and it was so relaxing.

Farewell to the Burlington, what a great place!

Thank you for your review of the Burlington. The hotel is reopening under new management on Thursday 24th of April. The Burlington will open as part of the new Great Southern Hotel Group.
When it opens again this Thursday, the Burlington Hotel will reveal a brand new look in its lobby and bar, which have both been completely refurbished and modernised. The bar has been renamed ‘Bellini’, and is now a stylish and contemporary bar.
The hotel will also open all other parts including luxurious bedrooms and suites, 2 restaurants (headed up by our new executive chef), 18 meeting rooms and our conference suite which holds up to 1300 delegates.
We look forward to welcoming you all back to the Burlington Hotel.

“Why take it down?”

I recenyly attaned a function at The Burlington on 30/11 and I think it is a total shame that such a great hotel is being closed down! Admittedly the place could use a touch up but I suspect that is due to the company closing the htel down and not the in house management. I found the overall service fantastic, from reception to the bars to the food service in the grand ballroo. In the main ballroom when I could not find my seat one of the managers went out of his way to find it for me, a great act of service for a hotel closing down. Losing the hotel, staff and managers will be a lose to Dublin.

“Thank goodness they are pulling it down”

The Burlington

The Burlington is closing for good (hopefully) in January 2008 - and not before time. It is quite honestly one of the worst hotels in Dublin that I have ever had the misfortune to stay in.
Whilst our room, on the 6th floor - on what they crassly call the Concierge Executive Club floor (although I've never seen a concierge anywhere near it) was OK.
Everything else about the hotel, however, is diabolical.
I was attending a large function (1300 people). What other hotel guests thought about 1300 increasingly noisy delegates taking over all the public areas in the hotel I don't know, but I know what my reaction would be. The food for us delegates (beef or salmon) - how original - was the usual mass catered garbage.
My wife stayed in the room - not wanting to mingle with the drunks. It took over 20 minutes for her to get through to room service, and when the 'meal' arrived it was totally inedible - stale bread, tough thin steak UGH!
We were therefore looking forward to breakfast in the 'Executive lounge'. When we arrived at 9.30, the buffet, which must have already been somewhat sparse earlier in the day had been totally decimated - no orange juice, no fruit salad or melon, and the most miserable selection of pastries I have yet encountered. On asking the waitress for some food, she suddenly pretended she couldn't speak English. I asked another waiter for toast, but that was unavailable unless I went to the main restaurant on the first floor. All the staff were a complete waste of space
The breakfast lounge shuts (for some unknown reason) at 10.00am, so at 9.55 the staff were already repelling guests. At 10.00am, the staff started clearing away the buffet despite the fact that 12 or more guests either hadn't eaten or were in the process of selecting food - quite unbelievable.
The young girl on checkout was the most miserable young lady you could imagine. In fact the whole management team and their untrained, unmotivated staff are a total disgrace. This may be down to the imminent closure but I doubt it; it's always been the same.
Thank goodness the Burlington will soon be destined to the history book - it just happened 20 years too late.

“Perfunctory Ballsbrdige”

The Burlington

The Burlington is a rather perfunctory business hotel with a decidedly
dull 70's look. Lots of tour buses, but a handy taxi stand right in front. I arrived on the overnight flight from LA and as expected (because of the morning hour) my room was not ready for a 3 night stay (10/21 - 24). I had a horrible cup of tea in the lobby (hard to choke down), but rhe front desk staff saved the day & my room was ready in 30 minutes.

Rooms are super basic with few amenities (I was on a high floor overlooking the front parking lot). The room was quite chilly and there seemed to be no form of A/C, heat or ventilation system. I contacted the front desk and they informed me that there's a steam pipe based heating system under the front window -- this archaic system never worked.

The bathroom was fine but you had to step up into the shower -- perhaps a bit dangerous for some. But, the hot water was plentiful.

A buffet breakfast was included and is perfectly satisfactory. Tea at breakfast was fine so I suspect the previous beverage problem was an isloated event.

The hotel does attract a strange "club" crowd on certain evenings (I think it might have been a sunday). It provided for some interesting people watching, but way more "OMG" than "eye candy."

The hotel is actually nicely located although I still prefer to stay down on the river, such as at the Morrison. It's about a 15 min walk to St. Stephen's Green in one direction and a lovely stroll in the opposite direction to Herbert Park through a lovely Ballsbridge 'hood (to near the 4 Seasons hotel).

“The last few months will be pretty rough”

We recently stayed at the Burlington for the Dublin Marathon. We were booked through the charity that we were travelling with. The hotel itself was quite nice, small but reasonable rooms, comfy lobby, cool pub with a neat but very hot loft section, nice restaurant furnishings. The one major probelm we encountered was with the service. We were told that the Burlington will be demolished in January to put up new condos, and that the remaining staff will not be relocated to other properties. This is blatantly obvious in the lack of interest and utter indifference shown by the employees. At one point after a meal in one of the banquet rooms, we asked a supervisor if we could take a couple of the wine glasses back to our room, and his answer was, "Take whatever you want, we don't care. The hotel's being torn down anyway."

The lobby setting is very inviting and on several occasions, groups of us would congregate there to have coffee or a drink, but one particular day, the server that was supposed to be handling our table was also handling room service and really couldn't do both. He told us twice that afternoon to hurry up and order because he was too busy to wait.

We also had a problem with our door lock and were unable to access our room for 24 hours or so without the assistance of the Manager On Duty and their master key. The female manager on duty the first night was quite willing to help whenever we needed to get in, but the second day was completely different. We had to ask 4 times to get in so that we could pack to check out. It took them almost half an hour to have someone let us in, but then they refused to allow us any extra time to check out.

It's too bad that this hotel will be torn down as the property is still quite nice, but it's definitely time for the remaining employees to move on. Hopefully they'll be happier somewhere else.
