Just passing by looking for reviews on the hotel we are returning to in Dublin on Saturday and came across 'The Riverhouse Hotel'. I am a 23 year old girl, partner is 26. Decided last April 2011 to take him away for his birthday as a surprise. Researched for weeks on hotels that would be close to the nightlife as we love a good night out. Having never been to Dublin I relyed on the photos on most websites about this hotel. It looked ok from outside and the rooms looked average. Afterall i thought, we are going to be in the room much with the shopping, nightlife etc, it was just going to be somewere to put our heads down. After a long train journey and having been up from the early hours we arrived at dublin bus station. My other half was so excited about getting away and there was me bumming and blowing about how much of a legend i was keeping this all secret for weeks and how we were going to a lovely hotel in the heart of Dublin. We got a map and after walking for what felt like ages we came to the Temple Bar area. Excitement really kicked in. There was little old me looking for the hotel i booked from the pictures i had of it and in front of me wasnt what i had booked. My face sunk, my boyfriend looked so disappointed, wasnt a very good start to our wkend. We went inside and were greeted by a lovely Irish girl who was very helpful. She told us our room wouldnt be ready until 2 but she would store our bags in a tiny cupboard (no lock) and we could nip out for some lunch and then come back. After sweating it out for about 2 hours in a local pub round the corner 2 o'clock came and we headed round to the hotel. Girl at reception gave us our room key and off we went. We were on the top floor, which stunk of smoke and that smell you get when something is old and ancient. As soon as we opened the door embarrasment kicked in, it was that bad i had to apologise to my partner who was more than understanding, i felt his birthday had been ruined. In front of us was a tiny shack of a room, nets on the window which were bogging, stained carpet, radiator hanging off the wall. The room looked like it had been put together by someone with their eyes closed. There is no other way to describe it, although it was all wonky and out of shape. Bathroom, cracked tiles and a shower you couldnt move in which we had to keep turning on and off as it kept overflowing every 2 minutes. Everytime we sat on the toilet it moved and started leaking. We stayed here for 2 nights and although the location was excellent, like right in the middle of Temple Bar area the hotel was disgraceful. On our last night, after a nice night out together, we came back to hear screaming out in the wee street were the hotel is situated. We looked out the window and saw some fella punching his girlfriend, his friend then joined in and so on and the street was in a riot, this entertained us for a while until the 'garda' came to split it up. We were guessing that the ones rioting came from the posh, upmarket nightclub which was advertised alongside the Riverhouse Hotel on its website, the Mezz. Honestly it was far from upmarket or posh. It was a hole and consisted of what looked like druggies and hypies. Im easy pleased, I dont get away alot so i appreciate it when I do. Usually if i go anywere no matter how bad it is I always try to make it a good time. Im not fussy and appreciate anything thats given to me, however this hotel is a total dive. Im not a winge or just someone who complains about everything and anything. You wil understand if your daft enough to go. Hopefully our trip to the Gresham will be a more pleasant experiance. :)
dont book, book somewere else and dont be disappointed like i was, actually make that mortified.
