I am disappointed to have to write a bad review for this hotel, it has so many fine features, it is situated in a lovely village opposite the sea, it is a real grand hotel with lovely atmosphere and I have stayed in this hotel at least once a year for the last ten years and it has always been a favourite of mine but frankly the service on our last vist was not worthy of a one star hotel.
The hotel has recently undergone a major refurbishment and the lobby/reception area now looks very impressive and is a much more welcoming area. We stayed in the Penthouse on the 5th floor and upon check in the receptionist informed us we no longer needed to get two lifts to it(this was always an annoyance, you had to get the lift to the first then a stroll to another lift to get to the "executive floor") so this made us very happy, not for long, turns out the information was wrong, she had only recently started working there and hadn't realised this was the case, not a great start!
The room is fantastic with a seperate bedroom and living area with great views over the beach but why oh why in this day and age is there no mini bar in the room???!
Breakfast each morning was a farce, the second morning we first had to wait for a table for 30 minutes!! then once finally seated it was another 20 minutes waiting for the buffett, this is unacceptable in a hotel of this size, it would seem they have increased room capacity by an extra 50 rooms but have failed to factor in this and don't have enough staff or tables in the dining room, it was like this for the whole 4 days we were there and our last day we had to miss breakfast or we would have been late for our flight, not a good start with a two year old! The cooked breakfast was okay but choice of muffins, fruit etc was of limited variety and poor.
On the Saturday evening we headed down to the bar at 5.30 to feed our son and my neice who was also staying there, the bar was full with visitors to the hotel (it was a communion weekend) and there was nowhere for us to sit, when I told the waiter we would sit in the lobby he told us we couldn't as this wasn't allowed, in the end he agreed as they don't have childrens meals on room service so we sat in the lobby, what happened next left me speechless. During the meal a waiter approached us and told me loudly that we were breaching hotel policy by eating in this area and that if my children made any mess to make sure I cleaned up!!!! Never in all my years of staying in hotels have I been spoken to like this, I was disgusted and made my feelings clear.
There were numerous more incidents with service, we ordered sandwhiches & soup one afternoon by room service and this took 1.5 hours to arrived and when I chased it up I was told it had already been delivered to us?? When the waiter came back to the room he could barely speak english but said he had knocked on the door and we had not answered, I'm sorry but this was clearly a lie as we had both been sitting in the living room whilst our son had a nap!
Another time I ordered water for the room after returning from dinner(it was 12.30 am) about 30 minutes later I get a phone call asking me if I'm staying in the hotel as there was no record of us on the computer, this was the night before we were due to check out!
The lift for the executive floor was broken for a whole day, not fun when you have to do five flights with a toddler and a buggy.
There were lots of other incidents but to summarise: the grand is a lovely hotel and still has that quaint Irish charm about it, it is in a lovely setting with good facilities but they clearly have a staffing problem, again I feel this harks back to the refurbishment, they seem to have have lots of new staff who have not been trained properly and some of them cannot speak english which causes communication difficulties and contributes to the poor levels of service. I do love the grand but I think I will give it a miss on our next visit to give the staff time to bed in and hopefully get proper training and iron out these problems.
