Stayed here this past weekend. Overall, it's not a bad hotel. Nice and modern, clean and spacious rooms. The neighbourhood (currently) is a bit of a worry. I can see that in 10 years time it will be a hip destination, but at the moment it is a very run down social housing estate with a nice hotel stuck in the middle of it.

The hotel is conveinient for the airport, but it is by no means "Dublin City Centre". Bus stop outside the hotel was useful. Taxi to the city centre costs 15-20 euro.

Annoying (not bad) points.
1. Fire alarm kept going off throughout the night.
2. Hairdryer is fixed to a draw that is far away from the mirror
3. Breakfast, although tasty was chaotic and without organisation. It wasn't clear what you had to do.
4. Only de-caff coffee in the room, when I asked housekeeping for some proper stuff she had to give me the staff personal supply (Exceptionally good of her).
5. The internet PC had a broken return key.
6. The lifts were out of order.

The hotel could benefit by offering a shuttle service to the city centre, and this may attract more people to stay.

Personally, for what I ended up paying in taxis, I would spend a bit extra on a hotel next time and stay in the city centre.

“Fantastic hotel and rooms”

I booked this hotel after reading some other reviews on here, all of which seemed to be positive.

The hotel is in a good location for the airport, the city is not too far and is within easy reach via one of the regular buses or taxis. From the outside the hotel looks clean and modern, with the interior and rooms being no exception. The rooms were light, spacious and well-designed with bathroom, comfortable beds, tea/coffee making facilities and a flat-screen TV.

The area surrounding the hotel is not so good, but is undergoing a massive re-generation of which the hotel is part. The hotel also has a restaurant which serves a fabulous Irish breakfast and also has a bar which serves snacks.

The staff were really friendly and seemed to know a reasonable amount about the city and transport network.

I would stay here again, it is an ideal base for staying in the Dublin area and great value.

The rooms in this hotel were lovely, really clean and tidy.
Hotel was about 10/15 mins in a taxi from the city centre costing about 15-20 euro each way.
The hotel were great about you bringing your own drink with you and drinking in your room..... even happy to give you buckets of ice and glasses from the bar.
Breakfast was nice but I would advise you not to go down after 9.30 as there doesnt be much left.
The Ballymun area itself doesnt have much, It has small shops, but I have been advised by every taxi man that it is a rough area and not to be strolling into their bars at night.

There is a SuperValue across the road from the hotel. Has everything you could want to make yourself a snack in the bedroom and also has a hot deli counter.

Parking is Secure with cars in an underground car park.

Vending machine on each floor - for them bottles of cold water when hungover.

Sky TV in all rooms - with a flat panel TV and Remote control.

Tea/Coffee making facilities in all Rooms

Only downfall of the hotel was if you wanted a lie in - this can only be done if you are a very heavy sleeper because all the doors in the rooms are fire doors and slam closed - continuous slamming of the doors in the morning wakens you.

Hi Ash,

Thanks for taking the time to write your positive review. They are always wecome!

I can tell you that I am aware about the issues regarding the fire doors. We have been working with several of our contractors in relation to our fire system over the past week or two.

It is always difficult to find the balance between maintaining our responsibility to our guests in relation to health and safety without affecting the quality of their stay. This is something that we will strive to improve as we move forward.

“Really Disappointing”

Travelodge Dublin Airport Ballymun

1/1 found this review helpful

I booked this hotel based on the reviews on this site, and was terribly disappointed.

I know Ballymun has a bad reputation but I was hoping to prove evryone wrong by coming home and saying I had a nice time there. However, the area is, to be honest, really scary, and not nice to look at - deserted, half-demolished tower blocks. I was not aware that there were such devestated-looking areas in Ireland. There were lots of groups of boys hanging around which i found quite intimidating.

The actual hotel is a lovely, modern building. The reception staff are very friendly and more than helpful, and had to contend with the underground carpark gate continually not working. (Which it didn't with us either in the way in or out)

The bedroom is clean and modern, and fully equipped. however, the soundproofing is very bad. We were woken by a man and woman arguing loudly, we couldn't work out if the sound was coming from outside or the next room.

Another problem there is the tea and coffee facilities. Either the water or the milk was undrinkable, which was a shame as this is a nice touch in a hotel.

We had dinner in the bar, as there didn't seem to be anywhere else nearby. I had a vegetable panini, as I'm vegetarian. They brought out a chicken panini so I had to send it back. That's a simple mistake, and I didn't mind, but it really wasn't worht waiting for. I don't know how you can get a panini wrong, but it was really disgusting. I have never heard of carrots or green beans in a panini before, and the sauce on it was cheap and disgusting tasting. I didn't want to complain as the barman was very prickly and unfriendly.

This could be a lovely hotel, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, and I won't be going back to see if it's improved.

Hi Ellie,

Firstly I would like to thank you for taking the time to write a review about the hotel. We can never improve if we don't get feedback from our customers.

On behalf of the staff at the hotel, I was saddened to read about your disappointing stay in Ballymun recently.

In relation to Ballymun itself and your reference to half demolished buildings, I believe you are writing about the demolition of Clarke Tower that was completed in March 08.

This is part of the multi billion euro regeneration project in the area. It will form part of the brand new shopping centre. The demolition is now complete and this eye sore has now been removed.

However, I must defend the area as a whole Ellie. There has been a lot of excellent work already completed in the area, including the Axis theatre, civic offices, the new swimming pool and gym and retail park just behind the hotel. We have had many excellent reviews of the hotel recently. It's location in relation to the airport, DCU and the city combined with it's modern facilities and very low rate makes it a very attractive option for our customers.

With regards to the security gate within the carpark, this has been repaired and was caused by the high winds the previous day before your arrival.

I do apologise for the disturbance within the hotel. It is sometimes difficult to avoid such noises even with some level of soundproofing. However, we will review this situation and take appropriate action.

On the matter of the tea/coffee making facilities, this is the first time this has come to my attention. I see no reason why this should have happened. I can only apologise for this incident Ellie, and I will investigate this immediately to ensure that this does not happen again. I know there is nothing worse than not being able to enjoy a nice cup of tea or coffee in your room.

On your final complaint about the restaurant and bar staff, I can tell you that as part of our complete rebrand of the hotel, our daytime and evening menu is being completely overhauled as we look to improve overall standards within the hotel. I can offer no excuses for any lack of service or unpoliteness by our staff. Our customer service is generally regarded as one of the hotels great strengths, so that comment disappoints me greatly.

If you wish to contact me directly at the hotel regarding your issues, I would be more than happy to discuss this further and look at ways of satisfying your concerns and compensating you for your bad experience.

Kind regards

Andrew Kavanagh

we have just returned from a 2 night stay at the ballymun plaza and it was terrific,we were apprehensive when booking as the area hasnt got the best reputation but it couldnt have been better, about a 10minute drive from the city centre and although there was absolutely nothing in the area after 6pm,the hotel restuarant and bar more than made up for it, the food is the best i have had in a very long time and the attention to detail by the catering staff was second to none, the breakfast staff were so nice and helpful and the food was constantly refilled and nothing was left go dry or hard, the evening meals were outstanding and more than plentiful.
the room was great and was serviced daily and all the toiletries were replaced as needed plaza tv with 12 channels and tea coffee making facilities, the area is so quiet at night that we got the best 2 nights sleep this year!!
all in all a wonderful hotel and we will most definately be back
