I've just returned from a short break to Kilkenny and it was my first time staying at the Ormonde. Initially when I booked through the hotel I was offered a weekend package which included bed and breakfast and 1 evening meal for 190 EUR pps.
However our plans changed and we were meeting friends on the Sat night and wouldn't be there for dinner in Fri either, so I checked room rates directly with the hotel and got both nights for 295 EUR which included breakfast. We figured with the money saved, we'd put that towards Sat night's dinner
We knew the hotel was being refurbished but there was no building going on during our stay, so there was no noisy machinery. Our room was lovely, with a double and single bed. The new decor works well, but beware, those black out curtains really do keep out the light, so we slept quite late on Sat ;-)
the staff were pleasant but at breakfast on Sunday morning they did appear to be under pressure and we had to wait for 15 minutes while they got a table ready for us. Breakfast was nice and even though a couple arrived in after the last sitting, they let them take a seat and served them too.
There had been a wedding on Sat night, and we saw the manager bring a bottle of champagne and strawberries to the happy couple who were at a long table with some of their family. That was a nice gesture and the couple were v pleased
Once the refurbishment is complete and the swimming pool reopens, I am sure that all visitors to this hotel will be extremely satisfied that they picked a great place to stay
