We went here on an anniversary special which was a present from my daughter for our 25th wedding anniversary. The hotel was spotlessly clean with good sized rooms, however, the bed was extremely uncomfortable and sleeping was impossible because of the noise coming up from the street below. The restaurant was above average but in order to get a quiet drink we had to go to the bar of another hotel up the street.

“Central, a couple of issues incl lousy food”

I stayed here for one night while on business in Kilkenny city. It was central and very close to where I had my appointment and this played a part in my booking the hotel. A real plus with the hotel was the subsidised rate that they get with the safe and secure multistory car park adjacent. I was able to leave the car for 24 hours in this car park and was charged €9.50 overall- just make sure to get the receptionist to validate your ticket on check out. I found the receptionists a little bit stiff- a friendly smile wouldn't go astray.

The hotel itself was old style and cosy, with lovely dark wood and rich colours of forest green, red, creams and gold. The bedroom was spacious and fairly clean- I noticed that the bed quilt had a number of stains and this put me off a little. The bathroom was lovely and the shower perfect. I found the room a bit noisy as my window was located over some kind of vent, maybe air conditioning or something like that, but a dull mechanical hum persisted the whole time I was there. The fire doors throughout the hotel close extremely heavily and expect to hear them slamming frequently until at least 1am and then from 6am onwards.

Lunch was disappointing- a thin chowder with bits of unidentifiable fish and shellfish which I found unappetizing. Dinner in the restaurant was even more disappointing- a pasta dish that proclaimed itself to be something along the lines of Wild Mushroom Pappardelle with Courgette and Cherry Tomato turned out to be tagliatelle tossed in oil while the vegetables had been fried liberally in oil until the mushrooms were unrecognisable as such. I think I got 3 cherry tomatoes. These veggies should have been roasted, and a bit more tomato and basil as a chunky sauce base, rather than oil. Too much parmesan also. Watch out for the pink, undercooked chicken in the smoked chicken salad- it was only when the lights went up briefly that I spotted it. The chocolate mocha tart and half bottle of Pinot Grigio went some way to improving my mood though!

I had problems with accessing the free wireless broadband on arrival and had to pay to access an Eircom hotspot as it was crucial, but it was working fine next day. No explanation or help was offered me when I asked at reception if there was a problem.

So fine for a night, maybe eat elsewhere and request a room in a low traffic area of the hotel. Great if you have business right in the city.

I stayed here for a weekend recently and went all out and booked one of their "Penthouse suites". The room itself was very clean and spacious with a separate lounge/seating area. However, the ventilation in the bedroom part was terrible and we were forced to sleep with the window wide open even though this let in the sound of revellers on the street outside. The food was good in the hotel (without being outstanding) but they managed to get our room service order for breakfast completely wrong on both mornings. The restaurant downstairs served a perfectly adequate dinner without ever threatening to become spectacular.
All in all the hotel staff were friendly and efficient and the location of the hotel is good for looking around Kilkenny. However, I do feel that the hotel needs a few Euro spent on it in order to attain the heights that they seem to be reaching for.

My wife and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights and found the hotel comfortable and acceptable. It was clean, and our room was at the side of the hotel and had double glazed windows to keep out the busy traffic noise. We changed to this room having booked a junior suite which whilst having better accomodation directly overlooked the main road and the windows there surprisingly appeared not to be double glazed. Food standards were good, a cooked breakfast served to order. The dinner menu was not extensive, but the quality was good, and the wine list very international and reasonably priced with a few bargains. No tea or coffee making facilities in the room which is a drawback despite it being available to room service order free of charge. Car parking is off site in a public mainly unsecured car park and the hotel pays the fee from 6 pm to noon the next day. If you arrive or leave outside of these hours, the additional fee is charged to your account. We found some very nice staff and overall were not unhappy with our stay.

“Surprised but Noisy”

We did not have any reservations and happened upon the hotel. The room was nicely decorated and very clean. However, and we were warned by the front desk, at approximately 12 midnight or so, the streets around the hotel, granted this was a Friday night, fill with kids from the pubs, clubs, etc and it is extremely noisy. We were on the 3rd floor and could hear all the noise. Other than that, everything was very nice. Excellent location and nice staff, very very helpful.
