Stumbled upon the Butler House on somebody's recommended list of hotels in Kilkenny, and what a pleasant surprise it was. Number one, it shouldn't be listed under B&Bs in Trip Advisor, but under hotels, boutique or otherwise. I try to stay away from B&Bs unless I have to, not being a B&B person myself. Second, the things that have been criticized about this hotel is what makes it so charming and a really historical piece of the town. The history of the place should be included as part of the room materials provided either at check-in or in the room (We got ours from a tour of Kilkenny Castle). One thing I agree is with the lack of an elevator/lift or a porter, although the Manager (Richard, a very nice and helpful gentleman) served as one when we arrived. We were on the second floor and the room we were given looked more like a suite than a standard room, to the point that I had to confirm the room rate we had been given when making reservations. Huge bathroom with marble sunken bathtub, separate shower, heated fllors, just great, and the main bedroom (sort of had two) was very large as well and extremely confortable with a 45" LCD TV and confortable king-size bed. We were facing the street and noise was not a problem at night or early morning. The gardens in the back were awesome (too bad the main entrance is not from the back, it'd be absolutely stunning as the hotel itself looks like a small castle from the back, actually it was part of Kilkenny Castle at one time), and the restaurant on the grounds was pretty good, reserved for guests during breakfast hours, and then open to the public for the remaining of day and evening. Location was excellent, handy to all attractions. There is a Pub nearby (ask the owner of the next door hotel for directions) for Irish music sessions attended mostly by locals. Had a great time among some of the friendliest people ever. Soon, our overnight stay was over and after having been allowed a late check-out we were on our way to Dublin, using the rail system this time. By the way, we used the Irish bus system (did not want to drive this time) almost during our entire trip and were quite impressed by their service and on-time schedules. It was incredible.
