We stayed at the Travelodge in Peterborough city centre for one night as part of my birthday celebration weekend which saw us visit York as well.
The only reason we stopped in Peterborough was because the train was far cheaper to overnight, basically costing us £5pp single from Norwich to Peterborough. Travelling the next day (Saturday) the GNER prices were horrendous, so even with evening spends in Peterborough we were still quids in. I also wanted to visit Peterborough to confirm that it really is an awful place to visit.
We arrived before check in but the front desk managed to find us a room, which was very nice of them. The fact that we didn't see a soul for the entire stay probably indicated there were not many people staying there on this particular Friday night.
The room is standard Travelodge. A double bed, a sofa and a reasonable sized bathroom. Everybody knows how minimalistic Travelodge have gone with their rooms, but at just £26 a night it was absolutely fine for our needs. I wouldn't pay the full rate of £50, but then again I wouldn't ever go to Peterborough again.
Location is good, about 3mins walk from the main shopping area and Broadway where the bars/pubs are situated. There is a Chicago's Rock Cafe (how are these places still going?) and a bowling alley right opposite the hotel, but we didn't hear any noise at all.
Peterborough itself is a dump. Yes it has a pretty cathedral but without the train station and connections to just about everywhere in the UK, there would be no need to ever stop here. As things worked out we wished we'd paid the extra and gone up to York the next day. The bars are busy but souless and tend to have a bit of an edge to them.
With regards to safety and the hotel location we didn't feel particularly vunerable, it really is only 3mins walk from the main nightlife area.
If you do decide to stay here then the train station is only about a 15min walk away. We got a cab to the hotel and it cost £4, but we just walked to the station when we left.
To sum up, nice Travelodge completely wasted in a city which is never going to be worth visiting, except of course business people.
