This hotel is really excellent - fantastic rooms, service, staff - as good as anywhere I've stayed worldwide. The nearest I could come for service and room quality is the Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong, which is many people's choice of the best in the world - the place is that good.
Just three things stopped a 5 star rating; there was a leak from underneath the bath, there is no pool and the price of the food in the restaurant.
There wasn't much anyone could have done about the leak when we discovered it at 6pm on saturday evening but it would have been nice to have been offered a change of room. However the hotel was probably full so a move may just have not been available.
The food in the excellent Clock Tower restaurant is very good but £8.50 for starters and desserts? Rather over the top but there is a daily manu of 2 of each course which represents better value..
No pool at a hotel of this quality? Surely an omission that must have been forced by planners but a disappointment nevertheless.
One other slight niggle is that the photo on Tripadvisor is of the lovely Regency house, which is where the function rooms are at one extreme end of the development. The bedrooms are in a modern block at the opposite end of the development which is not shown on any of the photographs I've seen. Having said that there was a wedding reception taking place when we were staying and the separation of function rooms from the rest of the hotel meant that we didn't hear a whisper of the steel band or anything else at any time.
Niggles over. This is one really REALLY good hotel, with great service, lovely staff and terrific rooms. It was my partner's birthday (which I had mentioned when booking) and a small bottle of Prosecco, on ice, was waiting our arrival. Over coffee after dinner the staff brought some special chocs on a plate decorated with Happy Birthday drizzled in chocolate. Really nice touches which made her stay even more special.
In summary, this is a really great hotel and anyone visiting York/Leeds/Harrogate/Wetherby for a special occasion could not stay anywhere nicer.
Room 261 has a private garden terrace that is not open to the rain.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review following your stay with us. We were all thrilled that you felt we were excellent, especially your room, service and staff. For you to compare us to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong is simply amazing and something that has made us all very proud. Here’s a bit of gossip for you, our Hotel Manager, Nuno César de Sá spent 6 years working for the Mandarin Oriental group and bought many of their values with him.
We were however very sorry that you felt there were three areas that let us down which resulted in you not scoring us 5 out of 5, we constantly strive to provide the best to our guests and we can only apologise that you felt we did not deserve top marks.
Sorry that you experienced a small leak in your room we would have happily moved you to another room, however as you say we were fully booked the night you stayed so were unable to move you. We can assure you that your room was checked prior to your arrival by our Housekeeping team, so the leak must have occurred unexpectedly after your arrival. We can assure you this is an exception and it has since been fixed by our Maintenance team
Thank you for your comment regarding a swimming pool. We are continually assessing the facilities we have at Rudding Park for our guests and I am pleased to be able to tell you that we are considering the possibility of a swimming pool in our future plans.
We were sorry to read that you found the Clocktower a little too expensive and can only apologise for this. We compare our prices regularly with our local competitors and while they are likely to be slightly higher than your local public house they are reasonably priced in comparison to other local hotels.
We are delighted you noticed that all our functions and weddings take place on the opposite side of all our hotel bedrooms, meaning that our hotel guests can have a nice peaceful stay.
We were thrilled that you enjoyed our service, we love giving our guests extra complimentary touches when they stay, especially when they are here to celebrate a special occasion.
Once again thank you for your review, when you next decide to stay with us please contact our Guests Services Manager, Stephen Mahon and he will personally oversee your reservation.
With kind regards
The Rudding Park Team
