“Great Location”

Holiday Inn Harrogate

20 Mar 2008

Having read previous reviews, we drove to the entrance, offloaded our luggage then I went to park whilst my wife checked in, so that process went smoothly.
Lucky, there were plenty of parking spaces.
We found all the staff to be polite and efficient.
We booked a standard double room which although small was adequate and clean, in particular the bathroom was spotless.
Having said that the room and access areas of the hotel are distinctly tired looking.
Buffet breakfast included in our price was excellent, piping hot, good quality and plenty.
The location of the hotel is it's strongest attraction, an easy walk into the town centre and the many fabulous restaurants in Harrogate.
Downside is the 5 pound daily charge for the car park but worst is the outrageous charges for wireless internet access. In 2008 internet access is an essential and to charge of over 6 pounds an hour is criminal. This and the car parking charges should be highlighted on the web site not hidden or covered up.

We stayed at this hotel two years ago (see review) and I must say right off the bat that the bathrooms have been greatly improved!

Check in was smooth, the room was clean and other than the minor annoyance of the remote control not working (an essential item when travelling with a 9-year-old who has been promised telly in bed) all seemed to be going well. The room was hot, but the radiator didn't appear to be on, so we left the window open when we went out for dinner.

When we came back, the room was like an oven. Not to worry --each room had an adjustable thermostat on the radiator said the information folder. Well, what we actually had was a thermostat with no knob with which to adjust it, and silly me -- I'd neglected to bring my pliers! I assumed that a call to reception would put things swiftly right, only to be told brusquely that "maintenance" had gone home. I explained to the woman that I'd find it impossible to sleep in such a hot room and that even with the window open, the temperature was still unbearable. I was told that she would "see what she could do". As it turned out, she did absolutely "nothing". Thanks for that then.

The room was sweltering most of the night, and with the window open all the external noise was audible. I managed to fall asleep eventually, only to be woken at 2.20am by noisy (drunken?) guests returning to the hotel. Eventually they went into the lobby, only to re-emerge a few minutes later at the rooms next to and across from mine. Lots of loud voices, laughter, knocking on doors, doors slamming, etc. Great. By the time I got back to sleep it was gone 3am.

All the doors to the guest rooms seemed to slam with unbelievable noise and force. However, when my son and I tried to close our door quietly, we discovered that unless the door actually slammed, we couldn't get the latch to engage, thus leaving the door unlocked. This seems ridiculous for a hotel and should be remedied quickly.

On a more positive note, breakfast (once again) was great. A wonderful buffet with plenty of variety -- nice fresh fruit, cereals, hot items, quality beverages and attentive service with dirty plates being whisked away as if by magic. The nice (German?) girl at the reception desk allowed us to delay our check out time, thus reducing our wait at the station, and managed to check us out quickly and efficiently.

Despite the reasonable price of the room, the uncomfortable night I spent just wasn't worth it. Luckily my son is still young enough that he'll sleep stripped to the waist but that wasn't an option for me! Next time I'll spend a bit more money and go somewhere that tries a bit harder not to cook its guests.

Coming in at £55 for a double room with breakfast included was money well spent we felt. After reading some of the reviews one does get doubts but to be honest our experience was very possitive and added to the great weekend we had in Harrogate. The hotel is centrally located,
arrived arround mid day and had no parking problems. Found check in swift and reception area ok we went upto our room and found a pleasant,
contemporary room which was imaculately clean. I guess the fixtures were 2/3 years old but in good order. No noise between adjacent rooms and they were occupied, so walls must not have been too thin! Breakfast was the usual buffet, what you would expect and allthough we arrived at arround 8:30 the restaurant was full but everything was well stocked. Final bonus was we did not have to pay for the parking token. Result

3/3 found this review helpful

We were due to stay in another hotel, but due to a mix up between the travel agent and hotel, we were "upgraded" to the Holiday Inn.

The building, it has to be said is an eyesore in the middle of a beautiful historic town. That aside ...

The reception staff were friendly and helpful.

The bedroom was modern, spacious and the bathroom immaculate.

Noise wasn't a problem, so I slept well and unusually I was woken by my alarm!

Breakfast was reasonable. I tend to opt for fruit at breakfast, and invariably there is tinned grapefruit option. This place offered the usual, but also fresh fruit too, so thumbs up. The cooked breakfast was on the better side of average.

The night before, I had a bar snack on arrival. That was fine, and reasonably priced.

Overall a pleasant, acceptable food and a good night's sleep. Holiday Inn should sack the architect, but I would stay there again.
