We stayed at this hotel two years ago (see review) and I must say right off the bat that the bathrooms have been greatly improved!
Check in was smooth, the room was clean and other than the minor annoyance of the remote control not working (an essential item when travelling with a 9-year-old who has been promised telly in bed) all seemed to be going well. The room was hot, but the radiator didn't appear to be on, so we left the window open when we went out for dinner.
When we came back, the room was like an oven. Not to worry --each room had an adjustable thermostat on the radiator said the information folder. Well, what we actually had was a thermostat with no knob with which to adjust it, and silly me -- I'd neglected to bring my pliers! I assumed that a call to reception would put things swiftly right, only to be told brusquely that "maintenance" had gone home. I explained to the woman that I'd find it impossible to sleep in such a hot room and that even with the window open, the temperature was still unbearable. I was told that she would "see what she could do". As it turned out, she did absolutely "nothing". Thanks for that then.
The room was sweltering most of the night, and with the window open all the external noise was audible. I managed to fall asleep eventually, only to be woken at 2.20am by noisy (drunken?) guests returning to the hotel. Eventually they went into the lobby, only to re-emerge a few minutes later at the rooms next to and across from mine. Lots of loud voices, laughter, knocking on doors, doors slamming, etc. Great. By the time I got back to sleep it was gone 3am.
All the doors to the guest rooms seemed to slam with unbelievable noise and force. However, when my son and I tried to close our door quietly, we discovered that unless the door actually slammed, we couldn't get the latch to engage, thus leaving the door unlocked. This seems ridiculous for a hotel and should be remedied quickly.
On a more positive note, breakfast (once again) was great. A wonderful buffet with plenty of variety -- nice fresh fruit, cereals, hot items, quality beverages and attentive service with dirty plates being whisked away as if by magic. The nice (German?) girl at the reception desk allowed us to delay our check out time, thus reducing our wait at the station, and managed to check us out quickly and efficiently.
Despite the reasonable price of the room, the uncomfortable night I spent just wasn't worth it. Luckily my son is still young enough that he'll sleep stripped to the waist but that wasn't an option for me! Next time I'll spend a bit more money and go somewhere that tries a bit harder not to cook its guests.
