The Holiday Inn was just as all tend to be around the world! Apparently it has been refurbished quite recently so everything was still quite new. The room I had was very large and wasn't overlooked. The hotel itself is a 5-10 minute walk to the centre of Harrogate.

The hotel is attached to a large conference centre which can make the hotel very busy and the parking can be a little difficult with only a set down facility at the hotel.

“Good value”

My wife and I had a last minute one night stay in March booked directly with the hotel.
We arrived just before lunch and found parking in the Hotel car park easy but quite a distance from the Hotel.
The car park is also quite small and fills very quickly, it is however reasonable value at £5 per day.

We paid £85 for an execuative room with breakfast included, we were on the 9th floor and had a good view, the room as expecetd was clean and what you would expect, the only problems we encountered were with the lift, it seems when it is windy and the doors to the loading bay are left open the wind blows through the lift shaft and makes the automatic doors hard to close,.

The breakfast and bar area were as expected, nothing fantastic but clean and efficent.
Value wise bad to beat I would say.

“Great Location”

Holiday Inn Harrogate

20 Mar 2008

Having read previous reviews, we drove to the entrance, offloaded our luggage then I went to park whilst my wife checked in, so that process went smoothly.
Lucky, there were plenty of parking spaces.
We found all the staff to be polite and efficient.
We booked a standard double room which although small was adequate and clean, in particular the bathroom was spotless.
Having said that the room and access areas of the hotel are distinctly tired looking.
Buffet breakfast included in our price was excellent, piping hot, good quality and plenty.
The location of the hotel is it's strongest attraction, an easy walk into the town centre and the many fabulous restaurants in Harrogate.
Downside is the 5 pound daily charge for the car park but worst is the outrageous charges for wireless internet access. In 2008 internet access is an essential and to charge of over 6 pounds an hour is criminal. This and the car parking charges should be highlighted on the web site not hidden or covered up.

We stayed at this hotel two years ago (see review) and I must say right off the bat that the bathrooms have been greatly improved!

Check in was smooth, the room was clean and other than the minor annoyance of the remote control not working (an essential item when travelling with a 9-year-old who has been promised telly in bed) all seemed to be going well. The room was hot, but the radiator didn't appear to be on, so we left the window open when we went out for dinner.

When we came back, the room was like an oven. Not to worry --each room had an adjustable thermostat on the radiator said the information folder. Well, what we actually had was a thermostat with no knob with which to adjust it, and silly me -- I'd neglected to bring my pliers! I assumed that a call to reception would put things swiftly right, only to be told brusquely that "maintenance" had gone home. I explained to the woman that I'd find it impossible to sleep in such a hot room and that even with the window open, the temperature was still unbearable. I was told that she would "see what she could do". As it turned out, she did absolutely "nothing". Thanks for that then.

The room was sweltering most of the night, and with the window open all the external noise was audible. I managed to fall asleep eventually, only to be woken at 2.20am by noisy (drunken?) guests returning to the hotel. Eventually they went into the lobby, only to re-emerge a few minutes later at the rooms next to and across from mine. Lots of loud voices, laughter, knocking on doors, doors slamming, etc. Great. By the time I got back to sleep it was gone 3am.

All the doors to the guest rooms seemed to slam with unbelievable noise and force. However, when my son and I tried to close our door quietly, we discovered that unless the door actually slammed, we couldn't get the latch to engage, thus leaving the door unlocked. This seems ridiculous for a hotel and should be remedied quickly.

On a more positive note, breakfast (once again) was great. A wonderful buffet with plenty of variety -- nice fresh fruit, cereals, hot items, quality beverages and attentive service with dirty plates being whisked away as if by magic. The nice (German?) girl at the reception desk allowed us to delay our check out time, thus reducing our wait at the station, and managed to check us out quickly and efficiently.

Despite the reasonable price of the room, the uncomfortable night I spent just wasn't worth it. Luckily my son is still young enough that he'll sleep stripped to the waist but that wasn't an option for me! Next time I'll spend a bit more money and go somewhere that tries a bit harder not to cook its guests.
