“Pleasant stay”

Ashley House Hotel

29 Feb 2008

Myself and three friends stayed here for one night, last saturday. We booked two double rooms. We managed to get parked, although I think a permit is required (which you can get from the hotel) but I didn't know this so was probably lucky to have avoided a ticket. One of the rooms we were allocated was great (room2), really light, spacious, huge bed and nice sized bathroom. The other room (5) was not so nice, a dull blue colour, the sink was in the bedroom and I think there was a toilet and shower room but I actually never bothered to look cos we all shared the nicer room while we got ready etc. We just slept in the beds when we came in from our night out but didn't hang around when it was time to get up because in contrast to the other room it was pretty miserable. The staff were friendly, we missed breakfast, I think it was served about 9am so couldn't comment on that although the dining room looked nice enough. The location is good for the conference centre/bars & restaurants. i would stay here again but only if I could have room 2 again

“over priced and never a 4* hotel”

We have just arrived home today after a 3 night stay at the above hotel. On arrival we were shown into a room that looked like the 4* this hotel is starred as. On checking there was no milk for coffee. I went to the reception and had to wait at least 10 minutes to get any milk. The complimentary toiletries that are in the bathroom are all from the local supermarket and im unsure how old these are.

We chose this hotel for the bar that it says is available, so on our first night went out and arrived back at approximately 9.30. After a 10 minute wait i went to reception and called the muber to be told that the owner may be in bed as he had been ill and had just come out of hospital.

On trying to get a drink i was informed that there was no diet mixer so my partner had a couple of beers and we left. This bar is very dated and we had to put up with a broken tv in the middle.

The entrance door advises no smoking but clearly the owner smokes in the bar area. As an ashtray full of old cigerette ends was lying on a table. Im not sure if this is now legal.

When we went to breakfast Saturday morning at 8.30 we found that it was not ready and when our hot breakfast came it was cold. We were advised by the waitress that the chef was either new or not there and this was the excuse for it being cold. They took the breakfasts away and micrwaved them not good as i had poached eggs that were now hard.

We went out at approximately 11.15am and when we arrived back at about 4.15 the bathroom had been cleaned but the rest of the room had not been cleaned or the bed made.

I went to reception again and was met by the daughter of the owner who advised that she was sorry about this. I confirmed about breakfast and she said that due to our problems she would reduce the bill. This however did not happen on our check out today.

Breakfast on the Sunday was better. We went out quite early and arrived back at about 1.30 to find once again that the room had not been cleaned. I went to the reception and reported this to the owner who advised after speaking to his wife that we had slept both days till 2. He advised that we had placed a do not disturb sign on the door. This was not possible as there was no such sigh available to use. AS it was not yet 2 i asked how that could be. He then went on to say that they cannot keep the girls who clean the rooms there all day.

I do not feel being out of your room by 11.30am late and i feel that in a 4* hotel if we had slept in then the room being cleaned after this time should not be a problem.

Ashley House Hotel

Be afraid be very afraid new owner has also Ashton B&B and 3 others. Not interested in customers only the money. Very noisy and breakfast service slow and each morning something was not available. Room was not serviced on one day. Room was not ready and had been given to somone else so 15 mins to sort out another hotel round the corner.

Very ordinary b and b , no facilities ,overpriced for what it is , must get away with it in Harrogate.
Read some of other [mixed ] reviews can only assume that the guys that were happy with this place aint been to any class hotels and were satisfied with pretty basic acccomodation albeit clean an kinda old fashioned.
