“Tacky tacky tacky”

The Yorkshire Hotel

Stayed here for one night on business. Hotel room was pretty small (even though it was a double). Room was dark, and the finish was pretty poor. Wonkey cupboard doors, wires showing instead of coved in etc. Generally a poor finish. Bathroom was big but very dark. Bath was generally grubby round the edges.

Worst was alot of the rooms overlook the central roof area. This has aircon units on which are far from silent.

If the rooms were as nice as the communal areas this would be a great hotel. The entrance is nice, the bar is fantastic, and the breakfast is great. Shame about the rest.

“Faulty Towers”

The Yorkshire Hotel

Don't be fooled by the slick PR about a makeover - it is less than skin deep. Our room was not large enough to swing a cat in, there was no heating in the bathroom, the anaglypta on the walls looked like it had been there for thirty years, there were wires trailing below the wall mounted TV, and the bathroom fittings were cheap DIY circa 1950. At breakfast we had to lay own own table from odds and ends left elsewhere in the restaurant. The cereal choice was cornflakes and all bran - that was it. And the fresh fruit was anthing but fresh. It was starting to bubble into alcohol in the bowl! At checkout I was in a queue of eleven with only one receptionist. It took 20 minutes to get to the front of the queue, and when I asked to see the manager the poor receptionist said that there wan't one on duty today! Took dinner at the Hotel du Vin next door - a world apart and four stars.

This was the second time we had tried to stay at this hotel - the first time was in November but when we arrived with friends, we were told they had overbooked us & they offered us a room at the Crown Hotel, with a £20 disount & a free meal in the Yorkshire hotels restaurant that evening & another nights free accommodation anytime in the following year! I thought that was very impressive by the Management of the Yorkshire Hotel. In November the meal in the Yorkshire Hotel was the worst meal I had ever eaten in a restaurant anywhere in the world - it was a good job it was free as I would have refused to pay for it.
We took up the hotels offer of our free night this weekend and was pleasantly suprised we had been upgraded to a Suite & the food in the restaurant was a massive improvement, it was very good.
The downside although we weren't in a position to complain, but if I had paid I would have been very dissappointed with the breakfast, it was very poor, little choice.
I was very impressed with the Yorkshire hotels Management & the treatment we received from them - Well done - that's great customer service.

After reading the reviews I was a little worried about this hotel - but on the whole I was pleasantly surprised.

Please note this is now a Folio and not Swallow hotel - and don't confuse with the Swallow St George.

Folio have refurbished the hotel - I guess the designers drawings and promises were fantastic - certainly the overall "look" of the rooms and public areas are good - but the builders must have been on the cheap as execution of the plans looks to be a bit hit and miss.

Parking was dead easy - no problem in getting a space outside. Reception excellent and we had a excellently positioned corner room with double aspect - looking towards Betty's Tea Rooms.

Lifts are small and slow - but there are stairs! Corridors are a little plain and institutional, but our room was quite good and had everything we needed. Bath was a little tatty - and there was little heating in the bathroom. Overall quite comfortable and not as noisy as I had worried about.

Breakfast was OK - small help yourself tinned fruit and cereals. Hot breakfast cooked to order, quality was fair - let down was the coffee - which was cheap instant coffee made in a pot - with the coffee powder showing - poor.

Overall hotel was OK - we got a good price of £75 B&B - not sure I would want to have paid much more - but at that price good value.

Harrogate was brilliant and I loved it - lots of great bars and restaurants - and Betty's - I have fallen in love with their Yorkshire Curd Tart and Cinnamon toast, and best tea for years. Had a great meal at the Harrogate Brasserie Hotel - live jazz and great food and service. This must be a star place for a weekend away, and the Yorkshire hotel is right in the middle of everything.

hotel is well positioned for Harrogate witha fair sized car park the room we had 128 was of a good size and fairly clean but very tired
Bathroom very poor pealing wall paper and wood work pealingand scratched
corridors very shabby
bed room chairs unbelievably un comfortable but bed not bad sheets and bedding good-Tv seen through a sea of mist even though a digital reception
tea and coffe making hidden on a tray in a bottom drawer took us 2 days to find it.and you cant lift the tray out with the items on the tray, cant see the reason for hidding it away
Recepion good restaurant and food very good private party of 50 on second night was excellent.
Heating v hot but easily turned off in room noisy at night with 3 disco on opposite side of street 100m away so dont open your windows.
the whole place needs a massive refurbishment but i dont expect it will get one
my expectations where not shattered but it could be improved in most areas
Staff where good and very plentiful and attentive.
Hotel very central for the shops and the conference centre
