Where to Begin? I am a frequent traveller and believe me I have never encountered such a grotty "over-marketed" glorified b&b in my life - infact, the last time I stayed somewhere like this was in about 1979 in a b & b in Blackpool (and I don't believe this hotel should think that I would like to stay in something similar in Harrogate in 2008!)
I booked a room (having already spoken to the hotel and read their web-site) and informed them that my party consisited of 1 adult and 3 teenagers, when I arrived check in was fine, receptionist lovely and helpful, so I thought great!
The lobby area was newly carpeted and decorated which leads you into a false sense of security - room 204 the family room we were allocated firstly, you leave the modern lobby to the first floor - "oh my lord" - The Shining is an understatement I don't really know what to say, but a previous review summed it up lovely, the walls look like they have been spray painted by a gang of breakdancers in yellow and gold, my room was on the second floor the corridors are narrow and dingy with narrow stairs and a real struggle with four suitcases. Ahh great finally the room - yikes!! 204 the family room (or apartment as they also have the cheek to call it) dirty carpets full of other peoples stains (you know the script), tiny and I mean tiny room with two single beds, a tv that is about 9 foot up the wall hung with no tv remote - helpful bathroom was a sight to behold no toilet roll holder (it has fallen from the wall and was lying on the back of the loo), shower head was broken, I did try the water pressure and you would have had to run around to get wet, also, and very bad there were no hot and cold indicators on the shower at all. Then the double bedroom wow, again carpets stained, yellow walls (a bit like what you would find in an episode of the Young Ones), the windows were old and in need of repair, the internal wall liners were crumbling and flaking in both bedrooms - remote had no back on it, where do I stop? Appalling. I went to reception and explained that it really wasn't acceptable and without a question the receptionist agreed that it wasn't great and offered to move me to another room - thank god. So, I moved all my suitcases downstairs to two adjoining rooms we had been allocated 101/102 - (one room was new and decorated lovely - although only a double in here) the other room - my god it was a mirror image of the one I had just left - we were tired at this stage after having moved rooms twice so we all doubled up in the one double room on the floor etc., - what a performance.
I was relieved to leave this place - and I hope I can save someone else the misforture of paying 130.00 a night for a sub-standard room and hotel. I must hand it to the managers though they have done a fabulous job of marketing this hotel and the photos are very arty although they don't show any photo's of their hallways and sub-standard bedrooms. I spoke the next morning to whom I presume was the manageress she too was only to happy to confirm that there is still work to be done and that the room was not really great but they are hoping to "get around to it" eventually - I am sorrry that is not my problem - I book in good faith on the grounds on what I see and what I am told, it is not my problem that they haven't had time to do all the rooms yet - as this is the case, then these rooms should not be advertised for occupancy until they are complete - and to charge 130.00 a night is a sheer cheek - you have been warned AVOID this glorified b&b and go somewhere else - I wish I had stayed at the Travelodge.
