As far as Swindon goes, there aren't very many restaurants centrally-located that offer really good food. However, I'd always considered the Weighbridge to have one of the best offerings around - aside from their lack of service.
4 weeks ago, 8 of us set about arranging a surprise Birthday meal, for one of the group's fiancé.
Saturday night came around, and the surprise meal started well, and our table was even ready on time (for a change!)...
But it then took 30 minutes for our orders to be taken - understandably, it was a busy Saturday night at peak times, but still - it's not as though they've only just opened to the public.
Food arrived about 25 minutes later, and we all tucked in. Not a single member of staff popped by to see how our meals were, even though there were issues with 2 of them.
So I stopped eating, got up, and headed off to find a member of staff.
One of the group opted for 'Taste of the Wild' which states on the menu "cooked until pink", but was cooked very well-done, and pretty tough to chew. That was taken away, chef's admitted it wasn't right, and another one in the oven.
The Birthday girl opted for the Mediterranean Parcel, but after a few minutes of tucking in, found a hair in it - few inches long, definitely not hers. Waitress took it away, and popped back a few minutes later to tell us it was a hair from a mushroom.
I'm no mushroom expert, but I've never seen any mushrooms sporting the latest trend it hairstyle. And if you drop in to Goldsworthy's any time of the week, there's not a queue of mushrooms waiting for the Shiitake Chop.
Anywho, if you see something that resembles an organism which you weren't anticipating being in your meal, you're put off.
Waitress told us it would be a 20 minute wait for a new one, due to the pastry - bit of a shame, seeing as everyone else would have been finished, but the Birthday girl went with it.
10 minutes later, a Belly Pork dish is brought out with the Taste of the Wild. No issues with the TOTW, but since when was Belly Pork a Mediterranean Parcel?!
Point the issue out, then told its ANOTHER 20 minutes to start the parcel again!
By this point, its an hour and 10 minutes since we first sat down, everyone else has finished.
Cancel the parcel, the Birthday girl won't eat.
Fair play to the waitress, she did her best, tried to sort out our issue, and actually looked as though she cared.
Which is a lot more than can be said for the duty manager at the time. We approached him to address the situation, because we were annoyed and upset. At first, he was "doing something else", too busy to even look at us - not a great way to start the conversation.
We address him with our issue, said that it wasn't great service, the food in the first place, the delays, the kitchen serving the wrong dish the second time round. And he stared at us with a very bland face, and went on with "We said sorry." - that was it. No real apology, no chance of him going out of his way to try and rectify the situation, and he sure as hell wasnt going to head over to the pregnant Birthday girl to apologise that she was going hungry that night.
He knocked the meals off the bill, and the drinks, but thats not the point. You spend 4 weeks organising a surprise meal for one person, and that person doesnt even get to eat. The manager wasn't bothered though - I guess with a full house every week, he can afford to be arrogant. But as a customer, when you’re forking our £25 or so a meal, you expect some manners and the service to match.
I even said, “you spoil one meal, and that's the nine meals ruined” - but I think that just went in one ear and came out the other.
The following day, a call was received from the owner (Andrew) who said he felt his staff dealt with the situation likes "stars". This owner must be so disconnected from his business, that he doesnt even realise the sentiment around his restaurant.
I took to social media to express my views, and safe to say, 100% of people who responded had a negative remark to say about the attitude of the establishment and their (lack of) service.
So annoyed at the attitude of the manager on Saturday night, I've felt it necessary to sit here and rant for 4212 characters.
