I have traveled a good deal throughout my life. This was one of the best experiences I have ever had with lodging. It was more of a B&B, which to me is a good thing. The wonderful, warm, friendly accomodating staff met our every need. The beautiful gardens in the back of the stone house are tranquil and enchanting (even for December).

Breakfast in the conservatory was just the best way to start a day. We enjoyed dinner one evening, as well. The service was impeccable. My husband's favorite part was basking in front of the 1400's hearth in the library, where they let us to take our dessert & coffee after dinner. I also loved the in-house pet, Jake. It truly made it feel like a home.

The decor of the interior is delightful with lots of fresh florals and greenery. The fresh fruit, flowers, home-made shortbread, complimentary sherry and water were unexpected treats awaiting us upon our arrival.

I witnessed a company Christmas party and was very impressed with the organization and wasn't surprised at the delight of the party guests.

I look forward to the time that I can visit there again!

“Great country house hotel”

Just a one night stay with family (all adult) but felt really welcome and comfortable from the moment we arrived. An early check-in was no problem (phone ahead to check). Tea in the library to welcome us. Attentive non-intrusive staff, hotel owner on site. Dining room in the conservatory, inventive varied menu presented with care and an excellent wine list. The hotel is spotlessly clean throughout with nice touches in the rooms; complimentry sherry & mineral waters, bathrobes, fresh flowers, fruit & homemade shortbread and to reassure visitors from the US they do provide "face cloths" in the bathrooms.
As well as the library, a comfortable lounge and bar and a large garden provide plenty of room to relax.

We arranged to stay at the Pear Tree as a last special weekend away prior to arrival of our first child. We were really looking forward to a lovely stay and a great meal. We turned up only to find that our reservation had been cancelled 2 days before the weekend without anyone bothering to contact us. We had driven for 2.5 hours to get there and arranged our whole weekend around this.
The receptionist did not seem to care at all about our predicament so we asked to see the manger. He couldn't explain what had happened although it seems most likely that they had a change to a group booking and they decided to kick us out of our room without any thought of our booking or having the courtesy to call us.
The best they could come up with was booking us into another hotel nearby and arrange for taxis to take us to their restaurant for dinner. Frankly we had no desire to pay to eat at a hotel that had ruined our weekend. They had no recommendations for hotels in the area and eventually booked us into a very inferior hotel next to the M4.

If you choose to visit the Pear Tree - may I cauion you that you need to double check your reservation very carefully and you are liable to "cancelled" without your knowledge if they get a last minute group booking.

Unfortunately we didn't get to stay here, despite looking forward to doing so. When we arrived early on Saturday afternoon we were told that we had cancelled our room on the Thurs just before, which was utterly untrue (hence we still travelled >2 hours to get there). I have an unusual surname and it is not feasible to think that they cancelled the wrong booking ("it was definitely your name sir").

They were then full and with virtually no apology told us there was nothing they could do. We had to ask to see the manager, who, whilst polite, could only offer to book us somewhere else.

It's not clear why they cancelled our room, (maybe a larger party needed an additional room at the last minute) but they should have handled the situation much better. I regret not making more of a fuss at the time. They were not helpful when suggesting other options, seemingly unable to say whether the alternatives were of a similar standard. As it turned out where we ended up was little more than a glorified Travelodge.

This was to be our last weekend away before the birth of our first child and was comprehensively wrecked by The Pear Tree.

“A haven”

The Pear Tree at Purton

Arrived at this charming hotel at the end of a day on the road and was warmly welcomed. The room ( see pic) was perfectly furnished and equipped for a country hotel and was one of two rooms on the ground floor with its own patio. The management and staff are clearly on top of everything and I think I can say this was a nearly perfect weekendl stay.
The Pear Tree is not in the most pretty part of southern England - its very near Swindon and its expanding suburbs - but would make a good base to explore west to Bath and Wells or north to the Cotswolds. The local water park area is hugely promoted as being the nirvana for family fun , but take this with a pinch of salt. This is a busy and booming part of the UK and construction is in evidence everywhere. Given all this, the hotel, sitting in its immaculately kept grounds with the nearby church tower ( a must see) is a haven of tranquility and not surprinsgly does a flourishing trade in weddings and receptions. Really one of the better hotel experiences I have had in some time.
