“Unrefurbished rooms a disgrace”

The Nightingale Hotel

24 Nov 2007

I booked an executive room and was frankly appalled when I was given a room that although large, ressembled something from 1979. It was located in a block away from the main hotel. The block smelt badly of damp and urine. The furniture in the room was stained, the curtains wouldn't draw together and the wallpaper was peeling. The electric heating was inadequate and the bed had a terrible cheap matress. I complained that I hadn't been given one of the very nice looking rooms on their website, but the place was full and they couldn't move me. I would have left, but it was too late at night to do anything. The breakfast the next morning did nothing to improve my mood. The restaurant has been refurbished, but it is uncomfortable, the tables are rocky, the breakfast is below average quality and there were no newspapers for single business travellers. The only redeeming feature of this place seems to be the staff who were all friendly and trying to be helpful. I felt sorry for them in the end

“What an improvement”

I Stayed for 3 nights as on business in the area andthe hotel is well situated as i prefer to be near but not in the town centre

There is obviously a big refurbishment going on at the moment. The Gym and leisure facilities have been completely re vamped since my last stay ,roughly a year ago. It Is now as busy and as well equiped as any exclusive club i have seen.Couldnt want for more, even squash courts and a coach on offer !!

The room i was given was clean bright and modern ( later discovered a number have been and all will be re decorated )

Wish i had discovered the menu earlier as the food really was excellent, good value too. The hotel will be opening its new restaurant and menu soon. If they have the same chef im sure its worth a visit .

There really is a lot going on, not everything is new or being changed. But certainly there is a push towards newer higher standards .
Will be interesting to see when its all completed

Most of all i liked the fact that all the staff were willing to do that little extra, a full conversation and good manners.
Would recommend the hotel for a business trip whether in a group or as an individual

“A thoroughly enjoyable experience”

The Nightingale Hotel

12 Nov 2007

Stayed at the hotel on the 8th October and what a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The hotel is being refurbished at the moment and the rooms are excellent. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The leisure facilities here are fab, and free to use for hotel guests. I will definitely be going again.

“A Last Resort...”

The Nightingale Hotel

5 Nov 2007

Had the "pleasure" of staying in this Hotel on business for 3 nights.

The rooms I was in was across from the main hotel building, and consisted of a 1960's construction which was in dire need of some upgrading. Think of the program "Crossroads" and that will give you a visual image if you need one. The room was cold, there were stains on the carpet, and strips of wallpaper hanging off the wall. Not a pleasant place to spend 3 evenings.

Most disappointingly cleanliness was a real concern. In the bathrooom there was hair in the sink, in the bath, on the floor with fixtures and fittings which must be at least 10 years old - and it showed! The shower head nozzles were also caked in gunk as well, and looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months.

Believe it or not, this is what you get in an "Executive Room" - wouldn't like to see condition of the standard rooms!

All in all, only book this hotel if you've nowhere else. At £85 a night it was vastly overpriced, and if they can't even get the basics like a clean bathroom then what chance does the rest of the hotel have?

The reception staff and bar staff were very friendly - probably the hotels one redeeming feature if the truth be told.

I have just returned from a two night stay at the Nightingale in Swindon - and I can't say I was impressed.

I had read that the Nightingale is a 3 star hotel, and that it is a converted 18th century vicarage - sorry, but I really didn't see anything 18th century! The hotel looks like a purpose-built sixties motel - not very inviting, especially as the rest of the village it's set in is actually quite picturesque!

There's a pub on-site (dark, slot machines etc), half of which is supposed to be the restaurant, but it's not really working. A few tables with white tablecloths and all that in the middle of a big, noisy pub? There's also a cafe, but that's mainly used by users of the on-site leisure centre / gym, so be prepared for people in sweatpants etc.

The room was large, but worn. The carpet was stained in places and the sofa just looked dirty - think someone had spilled coffee on it... I didn't feel like sitting down on that, honestly.

The wireless wasn't working in my room -- another minus as I found it too noisy in the cafe to be able to do any serious work.

The bathroom was large enough, but not clean either - hair that belonged to god-knows-whom, soap-scum and limescale... not nice.

The bed was comforable, the mattress nice and firm, and it was very quiet so I slept well - definitely a plus.

The staff were nice as well. They definitely tried their best to make me feel welcome and comfortable. They offered me a hand with my luggage and were generally helpful.

I didn't get to use the gym that's on site, so I can't comment on that - the class programme sounded tempting, though, as did the list of massages etc. that were on offer.

I don't think I will be staying at the Nightingale again - it was ok but I am expecting more from a 3-star hotel... some Travelodges I have stayed in were a million times better!
