“Well located and appointed”

George Hotel

24 Nov 2007

We stayed at this hotel as a stop off to Gatwick airport.

It is well located about a 10 min walk from Crawley train station and is ideal for those wanting a stop off before flying out of Gatwick.

Crawley had many great eating places and I would particuarly recommend the indian just accross the street.

The rooms were large and well appointed with everything you should need. The beds were large and comfortable; and the curtains blocked out much of the light.

Breakfast was good and consisted of a hot and cold buffet with fresh made toast and tea and coffee.

The hotel was going through some refurbishments out the back and the view from rooms in the rear of the hotel was rather dire; but this is minor as it's hardly somewhere you stay for the view.

All in all the hotel was comfortable and well located for travellers.

The staff were rather dour and could have cheered up a little; but I would recommend this hotel for a short stop over.

No Need to leave your house at 2am to get to Gatwick, better go the night before and stay at the George hotel.

The hotel is about 5 - 10 mins by train to Gatwick Airport. The train Station being a short walk to the Hotel.

Don't think of the reception and teh corridor carpet being representative of the hotel. The room sare really lovely, brand new, very clean and nice and comfortable. I guess the next stage will be to make the reception and corridors similar.
Too be fair it is in an old building dating back to the 17th century. It is a really nice building and the bedrooms are definitely 21st century.

I booked through the hotel website and got a very good rate (website looks a bit tacky, and when i tried to ring the number from the website it was never ending ring) and when I arrived at the hotel I had absolutely no problem.

You can decide to pay for breakfast or go without which is pretty handy as I was in a rush in the morning.

Overall very good.

Having read all the reviews of The George and also having stayed there on several occasions, I must say that I have not had a negative experience there. It is what it is - a cheap night, near to Gatwick for when you are passing through. I have found small things wrong with the rooms (last time, the loo roll holder was falling off the wall) but on the whole my stays have been fine, with good rooms and good breakfast. Overall the benefits of staying there outweigh the disadvantages. If you have a lot of heavy luggage it could be a problem because of there being no lifts. Also, the cheapest, easiest way to get to the Airport is to use the Fastway bus which you can get from The Broadway, 3 mins walk from The George. I have stayed there both with my husband and on my own and when I have stayed as a single woman I have felt safe and appreciated the fact that there are several places to eat within a very short walking distance of the hotel. People should not expect 5 star accommodation or treatment but it is certainly worth the money I have paid to stay there and I am planning another night there in a few weeks time.

Stayed here during stopover at Gatwick Airport. A fair standard hotel for the price. Located in the centre of Crawley and surrounded by shopping streets, restaurants, cars etc. Reception was courteous and efficient, room was a little dated but clean and comfortable. A 10 minute taxi drive from Gatwick and a complimentary hotel car for the return journey made everything so convenient. This is an ideal hotel for overnight transit passengers through Gatwick. Good value.

“Filthiest most unhelpful hotel i have ever stayed in”

George Hotel

16 Oct 2007

Dirty water, unhelpful staff.........I stayed in this hotel with my mum for one night prior to getting a flight to Gatwick the next day.Upon arriving we were served by possibly the most dis-interested, unhelpful and rude hotel receptionist in the history of man. Why he has a job that is customer facing i will never know!! Before booking the hotel we had asked if they could reserve us a parking space as we were paying extra for parking there during our holiday. They said no they couldn't but the car-park was large and we would have no problem in getting a parking space. We did have problems in that the car park was nothing more than a bit of wasteland with enough space for no more than 20 cars max and we ended up parking next to what looked like an abandoned car next to a smoking point for staff - nice!!! After we had checked in, we went to the bar with the intention of ordering a bar meal but luckily before we did we realised where the food was coming from - through a set of disgusting dirty plastic curtains, behind which was the kitchen (see pic). We ended up going to Weatherspoons a couple of doors down in the end to eat. When we returned to the room, I went to have a shower. I ran the water and waited for it to heat up before getting under the shower, but before i got in I happened to look down into the bath where the water was running and noticed the water was orange........i then ran a sink of water to double check and it ran orange - the only way to describe it was that it looked like urine (see pics), it was absolutely disgusting. My mum went down to see the receptionist who told her that there had been a pipe burst that afternoon and that everyone was in the same position - we had not been told of this when we checked in and when my mum asked how we were meant to wash, brush our teeth, etc. The receptionist said that he would send maintenance, who never turned up and when i called down to reception he just said that there was no point in maintenance coming to the room as there was nothing they could do. He point blank refused to do anything and was rude and sarcastic. The only thing they did right was order a taxi on time the following morning and the night porter was actually quite helpful. We were however promised that upon our return to Gatwick they would provide us with the courtesy bus, but when we got back to Gatwick i was told upon calling the hotel that the bus was "out of order" and to get a taxi, which the hotel did in the end pay for. All in all I would say never to stay here, it needs condemning.
