“Dont Do It! Worst Hotel Ever.”

George Hotel

12 Apr 2008

This was the worst hotel experience we have sampled between us having travelled for many years and to many destinations. We experienced more problems in a single night stay here, than we have done at previous hotels staying for two weeks.

Having originally booked directly with the hotel over the phone (which in itself appeared difficult) we arrived at the hotel to find that we had no reservation on the computer system and for this reason were asked to pay more than was either agreed earlier or than was stated on the website when researching. During this conversation, we were told by staff at the hotel that they didnt advertise on the internet despite looking at them at the time of booking!

We had arrived at the hotel at 1 oclock in the morning and despite having our card details they still said we needed to pay! It was then that we had to go to a cashpoint to see if we could get a statement to show the money had come out!

We were told by staff including the manager that the price paid would cover leaving the car in 'secure parking' for the duration of our stay and a return transfer to Gatwick airport following our holiday.

On returning to England at midnight, we contacted the hotel to arrange our return taxi which we were told to do by the manager, only to be told that the price that we payed no longer included this extra and that their driver had left the company meaning that they had nobody available to do so. We were then told that we would have to get another taxi at our own expense, this costing us another 15 pounds.

It clearly states on the internet 78 pounds for a nights stay and 8 nights parking with free transfers on a bus! At one point we were asked to pay 109 pounds (i think this was on the third occasion of someone trying to charge us). We never once boarded a bus and the hotel knew nothing about the transfers or taking our car to a different car park.

On returning to The George, we spoke with the same staff member who gave us a different expalnation than he did the previous week. We stated that they wouldnt know who's vehicle was who's and if it had been damaged or stolen they wouldnt even know who the car belonged to! To which this member of staff stated that they were not responsible for our vehicle whilst we were away and that they do not offer secure parking, despite the company website saying that they do!

We even had to show them printouts from the website of the hotel of which they photocopied!! No details were taken of our vehicle and as a result had anything happened to it then they would have been none the wiser.

In total we were asked to pay on three separate occassions and on each we were given a differant price, rising each time.

The hotel itself was very poor and the organisation of the staff was a shambles. They had no idea what was going on and each gave us different information. The customer service was horrendous and once they had our money of which they tried to get as much as possible, they had no interest in our car or whether we were stranded at gatwick at midnight.

The room was a good size but was extremely tatty looking and the decor needed replacing long ago. This can be said for the entire hotel, which hardly gives a homely feeling and makes it hard to believe that this hotel would be attractive or appealing to anyone.

The only thing in this hotel's favour is the location as it is near to the shops and the pubs although this personally would be easily second to staying in an attractive, friendly hotel which this clearly is not.

Each time that I watch 'The Shining' from now on it will bring back the memories of staying at this hotel.

The whole experience was awful, we would recommend that no one visits this hotel and they are in some serious need of training and a severe understanding of what the hotel offers. They appeared to have no idea that they advertise on the internet which in itself explains it all.

“Probably not as good as in 1812, but nice and economical”

My family owned this hotel from somewhere around 1795 until the 1840's. In the lobby are receipts signed by my GGGrandfather. Nobody there knows that, of course. It could have been a bit cleaner but the stay was nice both times we have been there. I recommend Crawley as a very nice place, easy access by train, close to Airport. Visit the town museum if it is open. Dine at the The Jubilee Oak pub several doors away.

“Not Very Nice”

The hotel looks realy nice from the outside but not so great on the inside. I was in a single room which was tiny - the bathroom was bigger than the bedroom. My window didnt shut properly and the curtains were all ripped. In the bathroom there is a hair dryer but there was hair all attached to it. the corriders are really creepy and the carpets look like they need replaced. On my way to my room there was a creep looking man who seemed just to be hanging about in the lobby. The reception booked a car for me to Gatwick in the morning, when the car came I had to go down some stairs and was struggling with my suitcase but the man at reception or the taxi driver didnt offer to help.

The hotel needs some serious renovation.

“Only Ok”

George Hotel

25 Jan 2008

I know this hotel is cheap (£49 we paid) but I didn't think it was very nice. The reception is dingy. The first room we got was stinking of cigarettes even though we asked for a non smoking room. We asked for another room. This room was ok except for a filthy skylight in the bathroom which was dripping with condensation and was black with the dirt. It was on the 3rd floor, there are no lifts which was very annoying as we had big heavy suitcases with us. This was out in a different wing from the reception, the whole area out there was fairly dirty and badly needs to be updated. The location is the only good thing about this hotel in my opinion.
All in all it was only ok, not terrible but I wouldn't stay here again.

“Well located and appointed”

George Hotel

24 Nov 2007

We stayed at this hotel as a stop off to Gatwick airport.

It is well located about a 10 min walk from Crawley train station and is ideal for those wanting a stop off before flying out of Gatwick.

Crawley had many great eating places and I would particuarly recommend the indian just accross the street.

The rooms were large and well appointed with everything you should need. The beds were large and comfortable; and the curtains blocked out much of the light.

Breakfast was good and consisted of a hot and cold buffet with fresh made toast and tea and coffee.

The hotel was going through some refurbishments out the back and the view from rooms in the rear of the hotel was rather dire; but this is minor as it's hardly somewhere you stay for the view.

All in all the hotel was comfortable and well located for travellers.

The staff were rather dour and could have cheered up a little; but I would recommend this hotel for a short stop over.
