MIND THE GAP AMERICANS!
If you want to see real historical England you must stay here at least a couple nights. The George is located in a popular area called High Street where little markets pop up in the mornings and some spirited "college town" bars open up at night in this historical square type area. This is an outstanding place to mingle with the locals and get a first impression of real England. Also, Worth Church is ajacent to this square and the trains to everywhere are just around the corner.
We stayed at the George because we arrived early and our Holiday Inn was booked. As an American, I was very eager to see something older than 100 years and the George was a nice experience. The George, built in 1615, had that midieval feel with the low, timber beamed ceilings, old oil painted portraits and crests and stained glass pained windows . Our room was small but clean and nice with a modern bathroom. The breakfast area was old world elegant. It left a lasting impression on me for the remainder of my trip there. However the breakfast was not very good.
If you are looking for spas and concierge service, turn away. The George has no elevators and the multiple addons over the past 500 years have created some odd manuvering hallways and architecture straight out of an Alice in Wonderland book. I loved that about the hotel.
We heard rumors from the locals that the hotel was haunted and that public hangings were once conducted on the George's long signpost that protrudes from above the front door. I think they were pulling our American legs, but that made my trip and wonderful impression the British people left on me.
I wish we had booked out entire visit at The George as the Holiday Inn had nowhere near the culture.
