Have stayed previously booking through Holiday Extras but booked direct this time and got a room in the Club area which was nicer and has internet access and coffee/tea machine in a small lounge. Reception ok and room was fine but tired, we ate in the bar as the restaurants seemed expensive - basic pub meals but tasty. Grounds are a nice bonus if you arrive early to take advantage of them, but the health club is disjointed from the rooms and a trek in the outside air following a swim.

The shuttle is £2.50 per person, each way - we didn't buy a return as the frequency was not very good. Ended up getting taxi back as 1 hour between pick ups - which cost us £11. This does add on to the expense - room was about £109, but for the peace of mind of being close to Gatwick before a morning flight and parking included we try to look at it as an extension to the holiday.

“expensive but disappointing”

Copthorne London Gatwick

7 Oct 2007

Food was good, especially room service which seemed the same quality as the restaurant food.

The room was shabby, but at least it was quite quiet. The staff weren't especially friendly or helpful. There was always a long wait at the front desk to get served.

The hotel charges £5 per day for parking, which seems greedy on top of what is already an expensive room rate given the standard of the rooms.

The hotel gym is in fact a separate leisure club (LA Fitness) outside the hotel precinct. But you do get to use it for free.

We stayed here the night after our wedding before flying to Italy on honeymoon. We chose it as the pictures on the website looked nice, it looked like a quaint country house hotel. On arrival we found surly staff and were pointed in the direction of our 'deluxe' room which we had expected to have a jacuzzi. No jacuzzi. We then went to reception and paid an extra £30 to upgrade to a club class room which we went and found - still no jacuzzi. Eventually my husband went and told the girl on reception and 3rd room lucky we were finally given a room with a jacuzzi! Other than this the room was fairly small, the food expensive and bland and the staff on reception the following morning were surly and rude. I would recommend anyone else looking for an overnight in Gatwick to try the Hilton or Sofitel, they are actually in the airport complex and much better hotels.

We stayed twice here on our way to U.S. and coming back. On our way to the U.S. we reallyl liked the hotel. It's has a traditional english charm and the fresh country air is really refreshing for being an airport hotel. My three girls loved exploring the hotel grounds and watching the swan and ducks in the pond. Food was o.k. and rooms were big. However we were given the very last room in the place which is quite far from the lobby. Gatwick bus comes to pick up passengers in the morning, but there is a fee, as usual. Lovely bar in lobby that is a reflection of a beautiful library with lovely old wood. However, coming back from the U.S. we had a totally different experience. Usually airport hotels have a half day rate as some people arrive at the airport in the early morning hours. At the most, we would have been willing to pay for the whole day. They gave us one room at 7:30am even though we wanted two (for a family of five). We were told the second room would be ready after 2pm. The room was small and we requested a larger room. They gave us a handicap room which had only two twin beds. Three of us ended up sleeping on the floor without any blankets or pillows after being jet lagged. They moved us twice and then at the end gave us two beautiful rooms but without Air Conditioning. We did use fans which is what we usually do in Europe. The older part of the hotel is not air conditioned. Many of the staff are international, chinese, indian and they don't speak english very well. In conclusion, beautiful hotel, can be good or bad depending on your needs.

This is the second time that we have used this hotel to park (sleep) and travel via Gatwick airport. You tend to have to queue at reception but I have always found the staff to be courteous.

The room was fine. Quite a walk from the main area of the hotel but that was okay. The room was adequate with an ensuite and tea and coffee making facilities. (There was noise as people left to go to the airport early but as this is marketed as a stay and park hotel so you can expect people to be leaving the hotel at any time.)

We had a walk into the nearby village and found a local pub that served food. We had a drink and walk back.

The food in the public house which is part of the hotel had happy hour and the food was reasonably priced and of a good quality. (We had a pizza and steak and ale pie.)

The only disappointment we had was with the parking. There are a lot of trees and when we returned from the airport we found the car covered in bird droppings. We had only been away for a week!

Otherwise, nicely located for the airport.
