“Terrible service - don't stay and parking here”

Copthorne London Gatwick

16 Apr 2008

Not a good experience for us at all. We (two adults, two kids 6 & 9) booked the 'stay and park' package. We stayed at the hotel on the saturday before we went to Egypt and we had three mains issues.
1) Were not provided with instructions about the car parking. When we checked in no-one told us what we needed to do with our car/keys over the week we were away. I had to ask about this and I had to ask for the bus shuttle (to Gatwick airport) timetable.
2) Had to go out the hotel to eat because of the ridiculously over-priced menu. We could not see a single main course for sub £15 (i.e. just for the main course) and for a family single night stay, this is unacceptable. I would advise travellers to go to Crawley Leisure Park on London Road in Crawley. They have a Nando, Frankie and Bennies, Belle Pasta, TGI's etc.
3) THE BIG ISSUE: On our return we waited for an hour between 11pm and midnight at the Gatwick airport bus stop for a bus (back to the hotel to collect our car) that was never going to arrive. The bus stops running at 10.30 and although we told the hotel that we need to catch the bus at 11.30'ish, they never thought to tell us that we would need to get a taxi. I had to drag my very tired kids from the bus stop and wait another 20 mins for a taxi outside Gatwick in the dead off the night - not a happy chappy! I clearly complained about this when I eventually got to the hotel and I was told that this was "my fault as I should have check the timetable". Now, I don't go in for the customer is always right rubbish, but I do expect staff to using a bit of common sense and make sure my stay is enjoyable.

To be fair, this hotel does have a great location for Gatwick and is in nice grounds. BUT, this is supposed to be a 4 star hotel and they're service was attrocious. They clearly get a lot of people like us (i.e. one night only before/after a holiday) and I got the feeling that because of this, they expected that I (staying there for my first, and last, time) should know the drill.

School report summary; could do much better (but they probably can't be bothered)!

“Nice grounds and country setting near Gatwick”

Stayed here for 3 days on recent business trip March 2008. My room on second floor of older section of hotel overlooked a courtyard. This place looks more like a country inn than an airport hotel, situated on 100 acres of land surrounded by woods and homes.

Room was quaint in a good way, although the bed was a little soft for my liking. Bathroom was slightly dated but clean and even included a heated towel bar. Also had a trouser press and (empty) minibar refrigerator. Windows had smaller flip-open ventilation vents at the top to let in fresh air. Interesting dark wood beam accents (real) and dormer windows in upstairs rooms. The newer rooms on first floor (overlooking car park) are more ordinary looking and smaller. My room was very quiet although a long walk from the front desk.

Behind the hotel is a formal garden and a public footpath /hiking trails leads through some woods and meadows. Another footpath in front of the hotel leads to a nice residential area good for walks. Note, there do not appear to be any other restaurants or shops within walking distance so you are pretty much limited to hotel food unless you have a car.

The Brasserie restaurant was good and the Library Bar was very quaint and cozy with leather furniture and a nearby antique clock striking the hour in the lobby. The adjacent pub has a very low ceiling.

The shuttle bus service from Gatwick is very unreliable/slow and costs 2.5 pounds...If you have two or more, just take a taxi (8 pounds). It's only 10 minutes by car from Gatwick and definitely not your typical airport hotel.

“The smallest most cramped room I've ever encountered”

The room was terribly run down (furniture was worn and scratched and just crappy) and so small and cramped we had to stack our luggage in the corner (international travel so we had three larger cases) and two people could not pass each other at the foot of the bed it was so close to the wall. There was maybe 18" on one side of the bed. The wardrobe was tiny and not very useful and there were no real drawers in the room so every time we needed something we had to bring all the cases out and sort through and then back to the stack behind the TV. We needed a Ironing board and had no place to store it except propped against the wall behind the door. Bath was VERY SMALL and if I was a large person I could not have stood in front of the sink to look in the mirror but it was more modern that the room. Because of the wear and general threadbare nature of the room it seemed unclean although that may not have been the case. We had just stayed at the Nutfield Priory for several days and that place was amazing and with breakfast comparable to this room. I would never go back. My travel partner stayed there for business travel several times before and was embarrassed and shocked at the room we were given because he had not experience the real low level that we had that trip.

Needs serious refurbishment, but the price is right.
However had to use the room phone to call a Mobile, as I had no signal on my phone. On phone 10minutes, I was charged over £28.00.
They would accept no complaint--hotel policy.
I felt Ripped off, and left with a bad taste.
Go somewhere else, there are so many better place to stay.

“OK... But in need of a Refurbishment in places & Re-designing!!!”

Copthorne London Gatwick

21 Feb 2008

Stayed here approx. 20 years ago and the decor is exactly the same as it was then - but now it is tired in places and in need of a refurb/re-design.

This hotel is fine for a pre-flight departure, as the location is ideal to reach the airport.

We had a standard double room in the old part of the hotel. The bed was a "meet-in-the-middle" type... it was old and too soft, not the most comfortable night before a long haul flight the following day! No complimentary bottles of water to be seen, nothing in fridge, but they did have tea/coffee making facilities beside the bed.
The room was very hot and stuffy (reminds us of the Travelodge's we have experienced). The air conditioning didn't appear to make any difference and rattled all through the night. We did open the windows, but having a small piece of thin rope to prevent them from being opened too far, we decided being opposite the Car Park, we are security conscious, so we closed them and just put up with it!

The bathroom, very small, dated but functional. The shower fitting is in the bath and we noticed there was water literally running out of the tiles - that explains why there was black mould in places.

We had a meal in the "Brasserie" which was buffet style, so you had a great choice of hot and cold dishes.
Breakfast - also very good, plenty of choices from continental to good ole English style!

The Bar area, very cosy and Reception area very large and ideal for social gathering.
Overall, we would stay here again, but would enquire if they had a room which looks like one they show on their website.
