To be fair the ambiance, decor and cleanliness are all excellent. The staff we had were courteous, friendly and seemed to know what they were doing. Waiting staff wear black (as they all seem to these days), even black jeans and black trainers!!
We were told our reservation was fine but the table was just being cleared (busy night we thought) not a problem. But we were not able to stand at the bar and have our drinks whilst we waitied...odd?? Do they have a secret pen for people who want to do that?
A few minutes later we were shown through to the "reserved" area. 6 tables, one occupied. "Would you like to sit here, here or there" we were asked. I was so tempted to say "the table you just cleared for us please, not one of the other four left free!". But didn't. Maybe not such a busy night afterall. By the way the other tables remained free all night!
Overall the food quantity is ok to be fair, if maybe a little overpriced even for "gastro pubs". But the quality is where it goes wrong! Cold food, cold plates (what is it with this country that we have to have our food on a cold plate!). It makes it all the more farcical when the waiter "presents" your food holding on to it with a cloth. Listen mate the plate is stone cold, you will NOT get second degree burns I promise you!
I also seemed to have spinach with everything, not as a vegetable or side course, as a garnish!! Some was part wilted, some raw.
Still beats shredded lettuce and a slice of tomatoe and cucumber from the 80's garnish days!!
Service was slow (as many others have suggested) just under 3 hours for a meal for 4 of us. My visit was more a social gathering as well, but it could have been a LITTLE quicker for sure.
The White Rabbit in Madistone is not the worse place you could eat or drink, but make sure you have plenty of time and try not to order hot food!!!
