This is the first time we had eaten inside at at the Derby since refurbishment, as we have enjoyed eating outside in the lovely beer garden with pleasing results. However winter is upon us, and as it was my 50th, we visited with friends on a Sunday evening for dinner. The interior is stunning, and immaculately set out, and everything is very clean; it really is a nice place to be. We went to the bar to order drinks, and waited for some time to be served, although the venue wasn't over busy, the one man behind the bar was struggling to cope. He explained that if we went to a table, he would send someone for our drinks order. A young pleasant man arrived about 5 minutes later, and I had seen a hand pump with an ale called Tom & Berry, and ordered a pint, he didn't believe the name I had ordered and suggested that he go and check, but he accepted the order when I insisted I was right; we also ordered an Aussie Red from the menu, and two soft drinks. He returned 5 minutes later, stating that the wine on the menu wasn't available, so we ordered an alternative. 15 minutes later, a pleasant young Lady came to take our food order, but I asked her to please procure the drinks order first. After some time the drinks finally arrived and we were ready to order food. The menu is quite comprehensive, but only offered my Wife two choices, as she is vegetarian, I went for the Duck, my Wife ordered one of the two options, and our friends chose the double burger, and the fish pie. About 5 mins later, the waiter returned, stating that the vegetarian order we had ordered, was not being served, so we ordered the second (and final choice). Another 5 minutes later, and another waiter informed us that the second vegetarian option was not being served! I expressed disbelief, and the waiter again went to the kitchen, returning a short time later, stating that Chef would be happy to do a mushroom stroganoff instead, which ironically my Wife would have preferred in the first instance. When we were served a short time later, the food was impeccable, just like what we had been used to eating outside on our previous visits. The duck was amongst the finest I have eaten, the double burger was immense but enjoyed by our friend (although he could not eat it all), our other friend enjoyed her fish pie, and my wife was happy with the substituted vegetarian dish. The presentation of the food was first class, and it is food I would recommend to anyone. The restaurant is primarily staffed by young people, with a poor understanding of the industry, and they are not supported by good communication to and from the kitchen, or drinks offered on the menu, or from the bar. As the food is so good, we would consider returning, but management really need to have a close look at what is going on, as poor attention to detail is endangering success, and that really is a shame! Although the steak nights are tremendous value, choices from the grill are much higher priced than other local pub restaurants. The poor service is reflected in my value for money score, as it is not just the price, it is the overall experience.
