After a day at Doncaster races the Regent seemed to be the perfect hotel, due to it's location and the peaceful and scenic settting ,opposite a small park.
First impressions were good, the reception and entrance were all recently refurbished and had a very modern look, and this was next to a very sophisticated small bar area which led onto the restaurant.
The reception staff were very helpful as they showed us the way to our room which was out the back door, and across the car park to an annex building which contained rooms one and two. This wasn't a problem as such, but it did make us feel slightly cut off from the rest of the hotel.
Our room, was on the first floor and as we entered the annex up a creaky staircase, the room door appeared in front of us. First impressions of the room was that it was a little on the small side. An en suite bathroom was provided which was of a reasonable size and was very clean.
The room was generally clean although it did have cobwebs hanging from the ceiling and a horrible looking stain on one of the pipes. This made it seem that the annex was only used when the hotel was very busy as a kind of "overflow. The room did contain the essentials however, such as tea/coffee and a kettle and sky tv(altho only skysports worked). The room also had extremely creaky floorboards and we felt sorry for the people in the room below! The bed was a decent size and was quite comfortable and there was decent storage space provided.
The restaurant was very sophisticated looking although a bit on the pricey side(dinner time) and in my opinion the food wasn't up to much. My partner disagreed however.
Breakfast was pretty chaotic, as we were sat at a previously used table that hadn't been cleared, and it was about 10 minutes before we got served. The food that then arrived was also pretty rank to be honest.
There was plenty of staff on, but a lot of them seemd to wait to be told to do something, rather than being proactive.
Overall, I probably would not stay at the Regent again, but saying that, it wasn't a bad hotel, it just wasn't worth £75 per night.
