“Tries hard but falls short. OK for an airport stopover but not much else.”
Just returned from a two night weekend break at this hotel. It isn't the sort of hotel where we would normally take a weekend break, but the price was just too low to resist, and as we get daily emails from Britannia I thought I would give it a try. There were positives and negatives. First the positives:
Incredible value for money at £100 for 2 nights DB&B with a bottle of wine and use of the gym/pool.
Room was clean and tidy with coffee and tea making facilities.
Breakfast choice and evening meal choice were good for the amount paid.
Staff (mostly - see negatives!) were friendly and competent.
Parking was very good
Hotel was easy to locate
Check-in was friendly and efficient
TV in the room had a poor signal and many channels (including the one we wanted to watch) just didn't work.
We overlooked a lower level roof and there was a lot of constant noise from the ventilation fans, even with the windows closed.
The chamber maid didn't turn up to clean our room until 4.15 in the afternoon, although we had been out all day. We told her to leave it.
There was a smell of cigarette smoke in the corridors, which I suspect was from the staff. Not just a one-off smell, but a smell that lingered there. We smelled the stale cigarette odour when we arrived and there was "fresh" cigarette smoke in the corridor when we left. I would emphasise though that there was no smoke smell in the room.
On the second day, the East European girl who asked us if we wanted tea of coffee at breakfast could barely speak a word of English. I wanted some decaff coffee but she could not understand and simply kept repeating "coffee?" as I tried to explain. In the end she simply walked away and ignored us. Eventually, a waitress with a Manchester accent sorted us out. There were plenty of other foreign staff with whom we had no problem at all and who were very attentive.
The pool and gym area were a bit cramped. Not much space in the gym, even though there were less than a dozen people in there. Adequate for a bit of a workout on the bike or the treadmill, but not great for a weight session.
On the whole, I have no huge complaints about this hotel, other than perhaps the non English-speaking member of staff, but we won't be staying at another Britannia hotel in the near future.
It is a cheap and cheerful hotel, suitable for an airport stopover or a bed to crash on a brief business visit. At the price we paid it was great value, but we did notice that the normal rack rate for a double was £155 per night, which would have been completely outrageous.
Don't expect too much from this hotel and you won't be disappointed.
Probably higher floor at the front might be better.
