“16th Feb '06 stay - Fine hotel!”

Britannia Manchester Hotel

I thought this hotel has been VERY VERY hard done to on the reviews on this site and I would say to potential future guests to ignore them.

Me and my boyfriend stayed in this hotel 16th Feb '06 and was very pleased with it. Paid £65 for an executive suite. I was absolutely terrified at what I had booked by looking at the reviews on this site but fear not!

Very clean and our room was VERY large, consisted of a double bed, seperate living area with tv (not placed on the floor, but on a stand as another guest stated), sofa and a chair, coffee table and facilities - which were all fine and clean.

Had a very large window too, noise wasn't a problem for us once we had closed it! Only a very slight problem with the bed, there were no holes, clean and very comfortable but there wasn't a quilt but just a checkered blanket with a white sheet over the top of it. In Feb it's not exactly summer is it, so a quilt would of beeen nice, also found the blanket to be rather itchy and irratating.

Dressing table with large mirror and also a lovely mirrored wardrobe which wasn't broken.

Bathroom lovely and clean with a jacuzzi bath! - Very impressed with. Even included BDAY and scales (Didn't even get scales in the Marriot).

Had a problem with the room cleaners, trying to get into our room at 9:30am to clean up, despite checking out at 11am they still insisted on knocking to wake us up. However, it was a fault of our own as we didn't put the Do No Disturb sign up. Didn't try the breakfast, too sleepy and hungover!

Check in and out was very easy and prompt. No queues!

Overall, a very nice, cheap hotel with a great location! Bar next door pitcher of cocktails £6! Don't be put off by the other reviews if you're just looking for nice, comfortable place to lay your head for the night! But...don't forget the DO NOT DISTURB sign if you want a lie in!

“awful! would not recomend!”

Booked last minute through late rooms (payed 106 for double room for 2 nights) for a valentines break. From outside the hotel looks very posh, and even when you walk through the door it looks like its going to be a lovely hotel. Once we got to the rooms we changed our minds! Our first impression was how small the rooms are, especially the bathroom - but this didnt really bother us. What did bother us was the fact that there were several holes in the sheets and pillows, the painted walls were VERY in need of being re-painted there were dirty marks all up the wall and it looked like some one had been climbing up the wall!all footprints up it!? (how odd!) There was a tray provided with tea, coffe, hot chocolate and biscuits and a tea pot and kettle - very nice... except the kettle and tea pot had not been emptied out from the last guests staying in our room! The mugs provided were also dirty and chipped - we had to wash them ourselves before we could (very reluctantly) use them! The cuprboards and wardrobes etc were very old and very dirty and when we opened the door to the bedside cupboard the door actually fell off in our hand!! (i'm not joking!!) The bathroom was also not really up to standard, although the towels were clean! Another thing about the room, which is not really a complaint but we just found odd! - is that the tv is on the floor! so if you wanted to watch tv you couldn't watch it from your bed, or even from the chair, you had to sit on the floor!! very very weird! This hotel is very run-down and in need of some serious decoration! On a positive note it is in a good central location right next to the coach stationa nd about a 5 min walk from the train station. Plenty of clubs, bars and restaurants nearby! Although, at the price this hotel charges, trust me there are a lot better hotels in manchester that you could spend your money on!

“Needs decorating”

Britannia Manchester Hotel

I stayed here for 1 night. I had the option to stay a second night but I'm glad I didn't take it.
I had a room on the 5th floor. The decore in the hotel is dated. The decore in my room was dirty, the wallpaper and the paint were peeling off the walls. The wallpaper was floral but no effort had been made to match the pattern when the wallpaper was hung. There were numerous places where bad attempts had been made to patch it up.
The toilet was dirty and the furniture dated.
The breakfast was mostly burnt and inedible- and beware! The guy on the table next to me paid for Bed & Breakfast but checked out and then went for breakfast. They said as he'd checked out, he'd have to pay for the breakfast!

I stayed at this hotel in June 2005 and again January 2006.

On both occasions, the wireless network went down in the evening. On both occasions, the line given to me was that the IT staff only work 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. so nothing could or would be done until the morning.

Stay away if you rely on internet access when travelling.

“Can't see what everyone is complaining about”

Britannia Manchester Hotel

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights in June 2004 and certainly wouldn't give it the bad reviews some have on here.

The hotel is quite dark inside the main lobby area etc but you can tell it was very grand a few years ago.

We checked in with no problems or long queues and the same when we checked out (even when an England game was playing in Manchester that day). The furniture in the rooms may have been a tiny bit run down but the beds were comfy, everywhere was clean and there was plenty of room - you don't go to a hotel to live in the bedroom do you?

Breakfast was great, can't complain. We ate our other meals out so I can't comment anymore on the restaurant, although the italian/pizza bit looked good - tempting for someone who usually doesnt eat in hotels.

The location is fab, within walking distance of the train station if you're travelling by train and there are plenty of bars/restaurants near by. Excellent location for the shops (the most important part of our stay!) so couldn't fault it at all.

Conclusion - if you're going to spend days on end locked up in your bedroom you'll probably find better places but if you want a good base for exploring the city book this one.
