Colmar makes an excellent base for exploring the Alsace region of France, and the Hotel Turenne is a good choice for a hotel. It's a fairly large hotel, taking up and entire city block. But it doesn't feel like a sterile, corporate hotel. It is decorated nicely, with flower pots in most of the windows. It's a modern building, but done in the half-timbered look that blends in perfectly with the surrounding area. Our room was decent sized, nothing fancy, but pleasantly decorated. The bathroom was very nice, with new fixtures and a nice tiled shower.
The breakfast room was very nicely decorated, with plenty of tables for two. The buffet spread was the largest of any hotel we stayed at in France. There were three sections full of breads, cheeses, assorted lunch meats, cereals, yogurt, etc. Plus, a juice machine, coffee and tea. A very nice breakfast, worth the additional 7.50 Euro charge.
There is a small, 16 car garage attached to the hotel that we used. They charge 6.50 Euro a night for the garage, but we felt it was worth it, so we didn't have to hunt for a spot on the street every night. Be warned though, the spots are SMALL, and the garage can be a challenge to get in and out of when full. One night when we returned, the car next to us was parked on the line, and we couldn't fit into our assigned spot. Fortunately, the garage wasn't full that night, and we were assigned another spot. Also, you have to ring the front desk to open the garage door. You have to tell them your room number and garage space number.
We also had trouble with our room air conditioner. It was blowing out hot air, even though we had it at the coldest setting. We have a thermometer on our travel alarm clock and it showed the room temperature to be 86 degrees. I went to the front desk, and the two desk clerks spent about 10 minutes looking over their computers, trying to find the problem. Eventually they told me they reset the air conditioner...wait a half hour, and it will get cooler. Well, it never did. The temperature got even hotter. We wound up opening the window that evening. The next night when we returned to our room, however, the air was much cooler. Someone must have fixed it while we were out that day. Unfortunately, when we returned to our room the following night, the maid had turned the air conditioner off, and it started blowing hot air again when we turned it on. Fortunately, the weather had cooled down by then, and it wasn't a problem.
The hotel isn't located in the historic center of Colmar, but it is a very short walk away. The street the hotel is on, Route de Bale, curves and becomes Rue Turenne, which leads directly to Little Venice, which is the most scenic part on Old Colmar. It is less than a 5 minute walk from the hotel. If you're driving, the hotel is convenient because you don't have to drive through the narrow, Medieval streets of the Old City. It's easy to get to from the A-35. However, we were coming in from Kaysersberg the first night, and found the hotel directions on their web site to be confusing. But once you find the hotel, it is easy to get in and out of Colmar.
So, in conclusion, I recommend the Hotel Turenne. It is a clean, modern, yet quaint hotel, in a very good location. Even though we were frustrated with the air conditioner problem, I believe it was an isolated event, and would definately stay there again if we returned to Colmar.
