Tonic Hotel is in a good location but the standard room is terribly drab and not what you see in the brochure or web site. We originally booked in for 5 days over a weekend at the end of March 2007. It rained non stop, the shops opened after ten and closed again at 1230 for 2 hours. The place was like a ghost town and i found it quite expensive. 4 Euros for a coffee on a wind and rain swept promenade. Dont go there out of season or you will be bored stupid. Good shopping but very expensive. Restaurants all seemed to be the modern wine bar type and no traditional french ones evident. I found the bars were empty but any that had patrons were full of smokers. We went there with a view to buying proprety and will probably never be back near it. We left after two days and still had to pay for the full 5 days car hire. Menus in french only, tv only one english channel (cnn). i did however find the staff very friendly and helpful. Mark from N. I.

The Tonic is in a superb location - just 3 mins walk from the main beach and near a row of nice shops and restaurants. The hotel restaurant and bar is very cool and trendy. Nice food and coktails. The hotel itself is listed as 4 star. But it is definitely more like a 3 star hotel. While the superior rooms have recently been refurbished and are very art deco and modern, the standard rooms are disgusting - pebble dash painted walls, rusty sink and bath, framed posters on the walls... So make sure to pay the extra 20 or 30 euros a night for the better room. It is well worth it. The staff was very friendly, and the service ok. I would go back to the Tonic purely because of it's great location, but not for the accomodation!

“One of the worst I've ever stayed in, rude staff, a rip-off”

I booked this only a day before travelling and was very grateful to find a room in Biarritz as it was a Saturday in August and everything was full. However I was charged over 200E and was told that the hotel had been recently refurbished. When I arrived, however, and was shown my room my mouth opened in disbelief. Downstairs in the lobby I was pleased to see that the decor of the rooms in the brochure was swish and modern. My room looked like it hadn't seen a lick of paint since 1985. Misleading to say the least. Then I switched on my bath to find it didn't work. I called the reception who claimed' yes I know' then when I asked him what he was going to do about it he suddenly claimed not to speak English. He then refusxed to pick up the phone. I had to find someone in the restaurant who was very sweet but all she could offer was another room which they 'didn't ususally offer to guests as the air con didn't work and the window didn't open.' When I complained at reception on check out they didn't care and wouldn't give me any money back. In my tired haze and desperation for a speedy check inthe night before I'd paid on arrival - big mistake!

I think the title says it all. We spent 5 days in the hotel in June 2005 and have recently spent another week there. Good value for money (around £ 100 per night including breakfast) and a really wonderful restaurant. It lacks a gym although one is opening across the road later in 2006. Will be going back again this year and most probably in 2007 too !.

“Great location, friendly staff”

We stayed here for a short break of two nights, and found the hotel to be very good. The rooms were clean with all mod cons (TV, minibar, hairdryer, safe etc) and a jacuzzi bath. Location is ideal, just a short stroll from the main promedade at Grande Plage. It was the staff however who made the best impression on us. They were all exceptionaly friendly and helpful, and service like that means we are likely to return here in the future.
