“OK for a one night stay”

Best Western Henry II

It is true, you better don’t have a large car or you exhibit excellent driving skills; the underground parking is a nightmare. We had booked a superior smoking room but were told at check-in that there were no superior rooms for smokers; that’s the hotel’s policy! A basic room was proposed as an alternative; we stayed whatever in a superior room which was large and clean and holds a small bathroom. It was freshly painted, has good airco/heathing facilities, mini bar and a coffee-maker.
At a short walk there are some good restaurants in the city centre. The breakfast is just OK, or good for French norms.

Just stayed one night as part of a wine tour of Italy and France.

We had a ground floor room which was perfectly adequate and being at the back was nice and quiet. Bathroom again was adequate. Breakfast was the usual BW, cereals, juice, cold meat and cheese and met our needs. Opportunity to boil your own eggs if you could gauge the right time!

Situated just yards from the city walls and many restaurants close by.

“Less than great stay . . .”

My mother in-law booked our rooms on the Best western web site and noted that we were going to be arriving late that night after driving from Paris. We arrived at midnight and the clerk claimed that we had no reservation and made no efforts to accommodate us. We stayed at another hotel for the night and returned in the morning to find that they had located our reservations.

We had two rooms with king sized beds. The rooms were not very clean. The beds and pillows were horribly uncomfortable. The bedcovers are in shabby shape and really need to be replaced.

I am a traveller for whom bathrooms can make or break a hotel. The bathrooms in both of our rooms were horrible. Our partial shower enclosure leaked horribly. The electrical setup near the sink was scary when I was drying my hair.

The hotel is located on a busy street. It has air conditioning, but really wasn't all that comfortable with the A/C running. We opened the window though and it was incredibly noisy (I'm sure that's why they suggested keeping the window closed) throughout the whole night but at least the temperature was just right.

Breakfast was okay with no service whatsoever and there was no one else in the restaurant area at the time.

“Great place for my group”

Best Western Henry II

7 Dec 2006

I brought a group of 15 American painters there late June through early July - about a 10 day stay. It's located a short walk into the town and what a great town Beaune is! On the way down to the hotel from the airport in Paris I was involved in an accident with one of my painting clients. An ambulance came to take her to a hospital for x rays just 20 minutes from Beaune.

When I finally arrived and checked in I found the night person tremendously helpful in getting me to the police station and night pharmacy for the medications this woman would need. So that was my first experience with the hotel.

Initially I found the reception staff less than enthused in my dealings with them - and I do speak French almost fluently. After deciding to not take it personally I realized once again that this is France and as a rule the French don't feel the way we do about service. Nevertheless I must say that after a few days the staff grew increasingly warm and friendly. That's a good thing.

Bottom line is I have no complaints and don't agree with the other poster about the breakfasts. Not all that bad, really. I had eggs and where can you find that in most French hotels? The rooms were comfortable and the hotel was great in dealing with my requests for painting critiques out back in the seating area. Would I go back again? Well, I just wrote them requesting rooms for another group I have scheduled for 2007.

“Great Hotel, pity about the breakfast”

The Hotel is on the main road from the A6 into the town. It is situated on the left just before you get to the town gate. The car parking is through a driveway next to the hotel but you need to ask reception to open the gate. the underground car park is very dark but has plenty of spaces.

The reception staff were helpful but lacking in smile factor. There is a Mac to access the internet in the lobby (1 euro = 15 mins).

The room was nice and had period detail in the furniture and decor. The TV had 1 English lanuage channel, CNN. I always require extra pillows and these were already in the room ready to use. The bathroom although very small was clean and functional. The room was very quite.

The hotel has no meals apart from breakfast. It is a short 10 minute walk into town where there are plenty of place to eat. There is a wide range of choice. The hotel does seem to have a very small bar but we did not see it open.

The downside was breakfast. It's included in the price, well, we were not charged extra for it. As you enter you are given a tray containing 1 cup, 1 plate, 1 knife and 1 teaspoon. The tables have a glass top over the tablecloth. The choice is limited and it was not of the quality I have experienced elsewhere in France, even at cheaper hotels. The orange juice was closer to water than orange. Guest seemed to be expected to eat off the tray, something I have never done and do not expect to do so.

Apart from the breakfast there is nothing seriously wrong with the place. I would stay there again but I would rather raid the local shops for better quality and choice. We were on our way to Italy from Lille so this was a good place to stop. By lunch time we were crossing the Alps and heading down into Italy.
