“Better than I thought”

Hotel Le Jacquemart

I had read the recent reviews before our trip but when arriving in Dijon with nowhere booked, a hotel with a good Trip Advisor rating full and this hotel featuring in my Michelin guide we approached nervously ... The lady on reception, who spoke even less English than we spoke French, was very helpful and welcoming. Perhaps because we got one of the rooms she had left it was quite large - would have slept 4 and so was the bathroom. Looking at the plan of the hotel on the fire instructions confirmed we had one of the bigger rooms - thought it did contain 3 beds. I can see what other reviewers mean about it being a little frayed around the edges but because I was not expecting much I found it rather charming and you can hardly quibble at the price. We only used it as a stop-over point. You cannot fault the hotel's central location for exploring beautiful Dijon. We were on the motorbike and my husband wanted the bike parking securely so we parked in an underground car park around the corner (the lady on reception told us about it, gave us a city map and a ticket for it and it was 5 euros for 24 hours) though she said the bike would have been OK on the pavement outside the hotel. I thought the buffet style breakfast a little disappointing but it was our 2nd night in France so we had not got into the French ways of eating off a plastic tray/paper napkin.

“Bad service”

I booked a double premium room at this hotel on venere.com .
Got confirmation from the hotel for a premium double room. When i called the hotel directly after a couple of weeks, it turned out they were fully booked and the only room they had for me was a cheap room without a bathroom.Bathroom was in the hallway.
When i stated that i have a confirmation for a premium room, they said it was a computer error and nothing could be done to correct the problem.I asked why wasn't i informed by email of a room change. There was no responce for that.
If i didn't call the hotel directly, i would have never found out about the switch! That's a very bad service.I cancelled my reservation with them immediately.Needless to say ,I wouldn't think of staying in that hotel .

After reading the good reviews we were a little disappointed. The hotel is very dated and our room had massive green and gold couches that looked very odd. The bathroom wasn't too modern but the water pressure was great and it was clean. I guess after staying at more modern places around Europe, this hotel was a bit of a shock. However it was much cheaper that we paid elsewhere, I just think our expectations were probably a bit high.

Dijon is easy to walk around so the hotel was in a good location. We were there on a Saturday and it is fun to walk around the markets. We also did a Segway tour and had many laughs. This can be booked from the tourist information office and you can either do a city or park tour. We did the parks and saw other bits of Dijon we wouldn't have seen.

We also did a wine tour - which was with a knowledgeable tour guide but you don't actually stop at vineyards, just drive around then do some tasting at one place. (not like tours in NZ/Australia). However did get to see lovely scenery.

Would also recommend catching the train to Beaune, beautiful little town to explore (lots of wine tasting!)

It is in a great location but the room itself is a little dated. The room could get a bit stuffy as they wasn't any air conditioning. We couldn't leave the windows open whilst we went out because we were on the ground floor. Le Bout de la Rue, restaurant a couple of doors down serves delicious moules and frites (mussels and fries) which is worth going to. The parking station is about 10 mins walk and you should drop your luggage at the hotel, not convenient to haul it from the parking station. Also, the Dijon mustard museum was a big disappointment. I thought it would be more related to the making of mustard and we would get a factory tour but it's not! I would consider staying here again.

We booked the hotel for an overnight stopover after reading the excellent reviews in Trip Advisor. The room was a suite of bedroom, bathroom and sitting room which apart from slightly grubby armchairs (would have benefitted from loose covers) was far better than we were paying for. Fabrice on reception spoke excellent english and was very helpful but the other 2 receptionists gave my French a good test. We had only a few hours in Dijon and the little we saw made us wish we'd had more time. Will definitely go back and probably to Le Jaquemart.
