Deep in the heart of the Burgundy region there is this stunningly beautiful property. We were were fortunate enough to be able to book one night at The Abbaye, staying there on our way to the South of France. We contacted the property directly and were very pleased with their efficiency and friendliness.
After entering the gates we were absolutely flabbergasted: Such a lovely and serene property and the beautifully maintained landscaped gardens. We were greeted by a very friendly receptionist who gave us some information about the Abbaye when showing us our way to our room. Our room "Citeaux" was amazing: Large, beautifully and lovingly decorated, big windows opening onto the garden and then the bathroom: Huge; almost the size of a "standard" room in any other hotel, with an enormous jacuzzi bath and state of the art washbasins and a separate shower. There was a tray with a small bottle of champagne and sirop (for making a "kir") and some snacks, compliments of the management. After making a tour of the Abbaye and the grounds and loving every minute of it...We had dinner at the restaurant, which has a Michelin star and rightfully so. The restaurant is fairly small and intimate and has, as the rest of the property, been lovingly restored with eye for detail. The dinner was quite an experience: Very, very good food and lovingly presented with great imagination. Staff was very attentive and espacially the sommelier was very helpful in choosing the right wines to accompany our menu. Still, one minor detail, but not to be overlooked: The maitre was rather "persuasive" that we should choose the special "Mothers day menu", which we (and almost everyone else) did. The courses followed each other very, very quickly (too quickly!), there was sometimes less than 10 minutes between the courses and there was no time to finish the bottles of wine, for that matter. But overall: The quality was outstanding. Breakfast was a buffet, with small "amuses/appetizers" to start with. Before checking out, we found a personalized comment- form in our room. Again: Great eye for detail! Did we miss anything...? Yes: It would have been nice if the managers, Mr. and Mrs. Cummings, would have greeted us personally or passing by the table at dinnertime or saying goodbye when we left. But that didn't happen: Although they were on the premises, neither of them introduced themselves to us. Small detail, but it would have been the icing on the cake. Anyhow: Wonderful property, beautiful rooms, great food and great eye for detail: It doesn't come any better in this region of France!
