We booked the hotel based on web descriptions, and chose a deluxe room with a terrace. Driving into Amboise over the Loire we thought we had made a great choice - the view of the castle and the quay was stunning, and we were delighted when we pulled in off the road into a very smart courtyard. Our welcome at reception soon shattered that - we were ignored for almost 10 minutes, then dealt with in a very offhand manner. A clearly fed up member of staff was detailed to show us our room, and almost ran across the car park with one of our cases, pausing only to huff loudly when he realised we weren't right behind him!
The room itself was a great disappointment - we knew from the website and reviews that the decor could be a little loud, but this room was nothing short of dingy. The overall colour was beige and drab, and there were scuffs and stains on the wallpaper, carpet and furniture. A large cold bathroom had very little in the way of luxuries, the bed was two singles badly bolted together, and all for E270/night. We'd had a long drive, and needed to wind down, so ordered a bottle of wine, and went to sit on the terrace. The terrace furniture was a cheap, stained plastic table, with 4 equally cheap plastic chairs, one of which was covered in what looked like mould. While we sat, a maid came to turn down our room - she was in and out in 30 seconds, and when we went to check what she'd done, we found she's just taken off the bedspread, revealing a very old brown blanket - it just added to the fabuolous decor!
The location was great, although Amboise doesn't exactly come alive at night - despite it being the height of the tourist season, most bars and many restaurants were closed at 9, so I would recommend Amboise as a base rather than a destination.
The average age of our fellow hotel guests seemed to be 70+, and with a very formal bar and restaurant (jacket and tie preferred) maybe we were just a little young! Surprisingly, considering the number of elderly Americans staying, the barman didn't know how to make a vodka martini - we ended up with a 1 part vodka/1 part vermouth mix!
The hotel is in a good location, with lovely buildings, but needs considerable investment to bring it up to the standard it promises. After one night we decided to change our plans, and checked out in the morning. Very disappointing for the price, and I think they are living on their name...
