Hotel is in a brilliant location, right near the Louve. Reception and Porter staff very polite and efficient. The reception area is clean and smart, the corriders the same. Our room was maybe a little dark but then we were up in the eves of the roof. Pleasant view of the courtyard from the room. The room was clean and tidy and had everything we needed. The swimming pool is lovely, very calming and the steam room relaxing.

All in all I recommend this hotel and it's strange there's such conflicting reviews. I always wonder how much time one spends in a room on a city break but there you go...

We stayed in the Clarion St James on Easter Week, 27-31 March 2005. The hotel has an excellent location, just across the Rue de Rivoli from the Louvre, and easy walking distance of the Champs Elysees, Musee Dorsee (10 mins). The Opera house and Notre Dame are about 20-25 mins on foot.

Booked our room on hotels - worked out at about £125 per night for the room (without breakfast). Some rooms overlook a small central garden - we didn't get one of these. The room was a good size but the bed was TERRIBLE. It was 2 single mattresses stuck together - both were ready for the skip, they were so sunken.

On a couple of mornings, building work started close to our room shortly after 8am. It was clearly in the room next to ours, but although the hotel staff admitted they were doing some renovations, they claimed the noise we heard was the next building and there was nothing they could do. So just grin and bear it basically!

Cafe Angelina just done the street does excellent breakfasts/lunches - but only if you're not in a hurry!

Hotel lobby and bar were basic but clean. Paris has so much to see that we spent minimal time in the hotel, but I would not stay at this hotel again. There are several other hotels in the same area that must be better value for money.

We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights on their romantic break package between 19 and 21 April. The staff were wonderful - as was the location. The room and food exceeded our expectations - rose petals on the bed and with the bottle of champagne delivered as part of the deal to the room. We were in a junior suite which included a mezzanine sleeping area.
Only thing stopping this being a 5-star was that we couldn't get into the room until nearly 3pm - but then again, they did tell us that when we booked!

the hotel rooms look lovely on the website but it is a total misrepresentation. they are brown and very dull. the carpet was worn, and the room was dirty. we found hairs on the bedsheets, a large breadcrumb on the blanket, and hairs in the bathroom. we moved rooms three times and each one was as bad as the other. the final room we ended up in was a superior newly refurbished room. it looked as shabby and was as dirty as the other two. the only areas of the hotel which were impressive were the lobby and restaurant area. its a shame that these areas came on top of the list for refurbishment.stay here at your peril! it is more 2 star than 4!
