I stayed at the Hotel Saint Paul for a week at the beginning of June. I couldn't have asked for a better visit. The hotel staff are friendly, courteous, and professional. They answered my pre-trip questions promptly, and arranged for a taxi to pick me up at the station. They were more than happy to speak English, encourage my faltering French, or switch back and forth, and provided directions and restaurant reviews at the drop of a hat. The hotel itself is beautiful. Old stone walls, ancient beams, and everything beautifully appointed and neat as a pin. My room was certainly small by American standards - which require 2 queen-size beds for a single traveler - but it was clean and comfortable and lacked nothing. I stayed on the 4th floor in the back, overlooking the high school, so it was very quiet as well. I usually don't sleep well in strange beds but this one was so comfy I had no trouble at all. The bathroom was spotless and very modern, and there was plenty of hot water. Free wi-fi and a stocked mini-bar and fridge were nice extras. The location of the hotel was perfect: a nice, quiet neighborhood, but only a block or so from Saint-Germain and Saint-Michel. Metro and bus stations abound, and most of the "major" monuments are within walking distance. Several excellent restaurants are within a few blocks, including the Polidor of "Midnight in Paris" fame, right next door. I traveled alone, and never felt anything less than safe in either the hotel or the neighborhood.

In each of the 31 rooms and suites of this 17th century dwelling the interior decorator has left his mark; no room resembles another. Some have four-poster beds; another has a ceiling with little twinkling lights and a Jacuzzi and, more, a still life deception. ... more less
