“Great budget hotel”

I've just returned from a 2-night stay at the hotel. I've never stayed in a 2* hotel before and was a little apprehensive. However, it offered just what me and my husband were looking for - a clean, comfortable hotel in a good location, for little cost!

Our room was on the 6th floor and was quite small. This wasn't a problem, but the ceiling sloped and because me and my husband are tall, having a shower was quite difficult. My advice - if you're very tall or of reduced mobility, ask for a room on any floor other than the 6th! The area can be quite noisy, but like the other reviews mention, it's quiet with the doors closed. This was another plus - 2 small balconies. There was one off the bedroom and bathroom. My husband said he would have liked a kettle and tea/coffee making facilities. I wasn't expecting these, but for those of you who might be, there aren't any. There is a tv though. It offers channels in French and German.

The location is good too. It's only a 5 min walk to 'Voltaire' Metro station and this connects quite easily to other lines and stations. Bastille is about a 15 min walk. We went to Voltaire as it proved much easier. There are cafes and shops up the road too - patisseries, pharmacies, fish mongers, bars and even McDonald's.

Finally, we found the service good and staff friendly. All in all, a great budget hotel.

- nice staff.
- clean room
- 25 min. walk from the Notre Dame. 3-4 mins to the (M) station.

we stayed two nights at this hotel, rooms were smallish, staff were friendly and helpfull, especially the night shift guy. clean and tidy. maybe rooms too small for longer stay, but location is ideal. 2 mins walk to nearest metro station, 10 mins to place de la bastille, where there is another metro and the open top bus pick up point. breakfast cost 6 euros, very basic. 1 roll, 1 croisant each, unlimitted coffee and juice. we took some cooked meat in after first morning. great choice of bars and restaurants in area, but no really expensive ones

We had decided to spend Christmas here in 2004. We held the room for 14 days and witnessed every aspect of this dump. When we checked in the room was not ready. However the front desk agent had not informed us, so we waited outside the room while the maid cleaned it. After a 14 hour flight, this was not a welcomed sight. When the maid was finally done, she did not apologize or even say hello, just left us there. The room was tiny. A Lilliputian TV was hanging from the ceiling; however it had no foreign channels, only French local stations. The bathroom was also Lilliputian and had no drape over the bathtub. In the evening when we returned to the hotel, the doors were locked. After about 5min. we found a tiny doorbell on the side. After repeatedly ringing it, we were greeted by the night watch security guard (not even a 24-Reception desk!). He said some thing in French as we squeezed into the 1 person elevator. It turned out that the person that checked us in had not entered our info into their book. Therefore, it appeared to this man that the room was vacant. After explaining to him and showing of our reservations he left us alone. Overall our experience with this hotel was very sad! We would have stayed in at least a 4-star, but wanted to spend 14-nights there. When you go to Paris, stay in a 4 or 5 star hotel for 2-3 nights. It will make your trip much more enjoyable!

I stayed at the Grand Hotel Nouvel Opera for 4 nights in late October 2006.

Hotel was peaceful and quiet with the windows closed. Clean facility in a non-touristy neighborhood, hosting some good cafes, restaurants and bars (a Moroccan restaurant, Au P'tit Cahoua, was fantastic and within easy walking distance of the hotel) .

The rooms were small (as should be expected), but the bathrooms were spacious. Staff was friendly.

Hotel is close to the Voltaire metro stop. It is also a nice (but lengthy) walk from the hotel to Place De La Bastille and Le Marais.

Ask for a room facing the street.

    • Any tips/secrets for future travellers? — If you get a rear-facing room on the first floor, ask to be moved. The view is a bit depressing.
