My wife and I spent 4 nights at Rue d’Odessa in the Montparnasse area of Paris. Our 6th floor apartment was first class - well furnished, well maintained and very well equipped. We’ve visited Paris on several previous occasions and have always stayed in hotels before. However, this was an ideal base for visiting Paris if, like me, you prefer the independence of self-catering (though we still ate out every evening). I hope I’ve now converted the wife to self-catering. These apartments are aimed at the business rather than the tourist market and this should ensure that the quality is maintained in all their Paris premises.
A couple of minor negatives: the hot water gets too hot very quickly - it might easily scald a child or unwary adult. No English speaking channels on the tv. However, I’d have no hesitation in recommending these apartments and will happily return there again.
The location: Rue d’Odessa is a smallish one-way street just off Boulevard Montparnasse. On Odessa itself there are several small restaurants, an excellent boulangerie, a couple of small convenience stores, two internet cafes and a cinema. At either end of the street there are squares which feature several bars, cafes, restaurants which provide a buzzy scenario at night. A very pleasant way to end the day - sitting outside, having a drink and watching the world go by. Despite the night life nearby, we found the apartment quiet, we were never disturbed by external noise.
There are two Metro stations within a 100 yards of the apartments - Edgar Quinet & Montparnasse Bienvenue. The metro is the best way for getting around Paris - buy a block of 10 tickets for about €10.
Our favourite Paris restaurant is the nearby Bistrot du Dome on Rue Delmar (01-43-35-32-00) which specialises in fish. It’s affordable, good quality, relaxed and friendly. The staff are quite happy to assist in translating the menu (on a blackboard). We’ve eaten there several times and have never been disappointed, though it‘s advisable to book.
A word of thanks to the very helpful Adriana and staff in the Bridgestreet Paris office. Check-in time is 4.00pm but, as we were arriving in Paris at about 12.00, I’d enquired by email if it would be possible to get into the apartment earlier. Adriana told me to phone them on arrival and they’d check with the housekeeper. I duly called and we were able to get into the apartment at 1.00pm which was a real bonus. Also, we had time to kill on our day of departure and were able to leave our luggage at the office on Ave. FD Roosevelt
