We stayed at the Hotel de la Portee Doree at the beginning and end of our trip to Europe. We were in a superior stateroom the first 5 nights and a classic double room on our last night in Paris.
Our experience with the hotel began before we left the United States, when the helpful staff answered my questions about the local metro station and set up a shuttle from the airport for me via e-mail. When we arrived well before check in, we were able to change clothes (there is a water closet on the first floor), leave our bags, and wander around the neighborhood. The hotel is in a neighborhood that has more of a residential than touristy feel which was nice. As other reviewers mentioned, this also means the hotel isn't centrally located - there is a metro stop right outside of the hotel, and it took about a half hour to get to the major tourist sites.
Once we checked in, the rooms looked just like the pictures both on TripAdvisor and the hotel's actual website. Of the 5 hotels we stayed in while touring Europe, this one was the most nicely decorated and had a very classic Parisian feel. We had the breakfast on the last day of our trip and it was a nice continental-style breakfast that was less expensive than some of the "on the go" breakfasts we had found in central Paris.
The superior room was definitely more comfortable than the classic double room but both rooms were fine. While we never had problems with internet connectivity on the lower floors, we did in our room on the top floor. As other reviewers have mentioned the metro can be heard rumbling from the rooms, but it doesn't run all night and it really wasn't much of a problem (and that's coming from a light sleeper).
We had one minor disconcerting experience when the space heater in our room apparently led the housekeeping staff to think we were smoking in the completely non-smoking hotel. We were asked about it when we collected our room key the second night, and since neither of us are smokers we speculated it must have been the space heater. The following night, the space heater had been removed from our room and we weren't questioned again.
I would recommend the hotel to anyone who wants to pretend to experience residential Paris while still connected to the city center through the conveniently located metro. If/when we return to Paris, I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
