This two star hotel is close to the Gare du Lyon, just south of Bastille. I'm not sure how full the hotel was, so have no idea whether the room I had was given to me of necessity or through some less generous impulse. Nowadays I divide hotels into two sorts: those that are sweet and kind and generous towards the single traveller, and those that .. are not. This one falls pretty firmly into the second category.
Good things: pleasant common areas, roaring radiator so room warm - welcome as it was chilly outside, clean(- ish - the carpet could do with cleaning, or, ideally, renewal); lots of hot water; just-adequately-sized shower; desk; cotton sheets and reasonable lighting.
Not so good things: grim view (back of hotel), shoddy pillow , minor damage to walls -from ?moving a telephone- needs rectifying (it adds to the mild aura of cheerlessness); and - the real irritant - noise from the much commented-upon lift, and the corridors. I'm deaf, and therefore usually fairly impervious to noise, but was nevertheless repeatedly awoken during the night by the clattering of the lift mechanism and the opening and closing of its doors. Madame was blithely unconcerned by my report of my discomfort. I don't know whether other single rooms are sited so that this would be a problem in all of them, but I wouldn't willingly stay in room 208 again . One more word about that lift. The entrance is half way up each flight of stairs, on the 'turn'. Take care when stepping out - there isn't much space: the lift opens almost directly on to the staircase!
