In 2010 I went to Paris by myself for a few days before the holidays. On my last night I decided to try Les Papilles as it was highly rated and near my hotel. I left the hotel without an umbrella, got rained on, finally found Les Papilles - cozy! Warm! Delicious-looking food! A friendly member of the staff...that told me I needed a reservation. Heartbreak! More walking in the rain! A promise that I would return - with a reservation - on my next visit to Paris.
Spring 2012 I was coming back! I made sure to book a table 2 weeks in advance for my friend and I. We were both very excited after reading countless positive reviews of Les Papilles. Using google translator, I emailed the owner and booked a table for a late-ish dinner that would end up being the best meal of our 10 day Paris & London journey. Here's what's great about Les Papilles:
-Authentic, delicious French cuisine.
-No menu to fuss with - it's prix fixe with no options. Don't speak french? Don't worry!
-The price is right. 30ish EUR for 4 course? DONE.
-You shop (literally) around the restaurant for a wine that meets your budget and taste requirements.
The meal was at such a leisurely pace. We started with a lovely pot of cauliflower soup - perfect for a slightly chilly spring evening. It was so good I was sad when the bowl was gone. Main course was a cut of beef that had been marinated for at least a day in red wide and roasted with vegetables. Rustic, simple and succulent. A cheese course of bleu cheese with a jam followed. Amazing.
And dessert - a caramel panna cotta that was out of this world.
Stuffed from dinner we meandered through Le Quartier Latin, across the Seine and through Le Marais back to Bastille and capped off one of the best nights ever.
If you are going to Paris, you must go to Les Papilles. It was worth the 16 month wait for me!
