The rooms in this hotel are small and fairly ordinarily furnished - nothing to write home about. The air conditioning was not working and as my room only had doors out to the garden which for security reasons I did not want to leave open all night - no windows to open - it felt sifflling and airless. I asked for a new room. I was provided with a junior suite (which was at least a comfortable temperature as I could open the windows) - which was roomier than my previous room. My friends had a twin room which was also very small for two people. Access to the old city is good - but would be more atmospheric to actually stay in the old city itself than down the road.

“we loved this hotel”

Mercure Carcassonne Porte de la Cite

10 Apr 2008

After reading reviews on this hotel we decided to book for a weekend break. We were delighted with it,our room was small but clean, quiet and comfortable(lovely views as well). It's position for exploring Carcassonne and Le Cite was excellent. We don't normally eat in hotels, preferring to find a nice restaurant, but on this occasion chose to on the first night and thought the food so good we also ate there on the second night !

“Excellent food, delightful staff”

Mercure Carcassonne Porte de la Cite

Been meaning to do this ever since we got back, 18 months ago! We stayed for a week. Frankly hadn't expected much from a chain hotel except a sort of antiseptic efficiency. Well, we certainly got the cleanliness and efficiency; room was pleasant enough ...BUT... (1) Staff were terrific! Courteous, helpful - and diplomatic about my French. A lot of smiles and laughter about the place. Delightful. What sticks in my mind, however, is the food. Extraordinarily good. 'Specials' changed daily and seemed to be cooked by someone who (a) knows how to cook and (b) enjoys doing so. Delicious, interesting, even a little adventurous. We quickly learned that by and large this is one of the best places to eat in Carcassonne. And that's before we talk about price. Frankly the specials represented almost unbelieveable value for money ... about 15 Euros (then) for evening dinner. That's Euros not Pounds. That's for a 2 or 3 course meal not a course.... Amazing.

“Outstanding hotel!”

We only had one night at this superb hotel and would not hesitate to stay there again - I really wouldn't want to stay anywhere else in Carcassonne. It's only a few minutes walk from the old Cite.

The staff are so welcoming and friendly and they all communicated well in English. There is a cosy little bar area with a lovely open log fire. The food in the restaurant was delicious, so you don't have to venture out and fall for the "tourist trap" restaurants in the old Cite . We had the set menu for 16 euros - a choice of 3 starters, 3 mains and 2 desserts - all were exceptionally good as was the wine!

The rooms are quite small but adequate and so clean. Highly recommended hotel.

We stayed here based on other peoples' reviews and weren't disappointed! We booked through an American website and got breakfast included in the room rate - and that room rate was very competative compared to booking direct with the hotel. Rooms are small but clean and adequate and the food at the hotel was superb. Having booked for a few days over our wedding anniversary, we had planned a celebration meal out in the town but our first night experiences in the hotel restaurant meant we decided to eat in the hotel every night . Food was well presented and tasty and very good value; the wine list was extensive and suitable for all pockets & occasions. The staff were very friendly and helpful, especially in the restaurant. The only area slightly below par was the service in the bar at certain times - but this is a minor point. Hotel's central location is perfect for exploring Carcassonne on foot., no parking hassles which is especially useful in high season. Would certainly stay there again and recommend it to anyone - just don't expect a spaceous room!
