Nimes? Never heard of it. That is, until Ryanair offered free travel from Liverpool for the weekend. OK, plus charges and taxes, but the whole shabang only came to ninety quid including priority boarding. So, global warming on the back burner (in a manner of speaking) we decided to give it a try.
Brilliant! We like making rash decisions, you never quite know if they're gonna work or not. This one did. Great check-in, great flight, great town. Best of all, the Hotel La Baume! Quirky, stone built ex-merchants residence set in a quiet street right slap bang in the middle of town! As with many of these place in France they don't look much on the outside but the interiors are always a pleasant surprise. Largely untouched and still sporting original features the La Baume is a step back in time, full of character and twisty turns. An unusual atrium provides natural light to all the four floors and stone stairs lead to small carpeted corridors and bedrooms. You get yer basic French chambre with shuttered window, en-suite bathroom, TV, mini bar, but cool without the buzz of air-con. Breakfast in the morning is fresh bread, fresh meats, fresh fruit. Don't ask for a full English will you? Bacon and eggs in the sunshine? Yechh!
One final thing, if you must bring a car you'll need to park underground about three or four minutes safe easy walk away.
We'll go back, no danger.

We stayed at this hotel for one night. Arrived late at night, receptionist was waiting for us. He helped us with the luggage and showed the parking. It's really 5 minutes of walk, and 8 euros per day. When we came back to the hotel, the receptionist was gone to sleep, but there was an asian guy waiting to give us our key. He didn't seem to speak any english, and I'm not sure about french either. We booked a junior suite (130 euro) so the size of the room was ok, but it wasn't really cosy (no carpets near bed, no sweet little things). Just across the street there is a house, where people really seem to like watching hotel guests. Though if you close the curtains - it's fine. What was really disappointing - smell of cigarretes coming from the ventilation, though our room was no smoking.
We didn't have breakfast there, so can't tell anything. Also the building is very old and has beautiful stairs with a nice bar.
In the room we had a wi-fi connection for 8 euros per hour or 13 per 24 hours.
Overall impression - not bad, but not for holiday. For the business trip - no problem at all. Maybe it's a good value for money, though now I realise that it was better to pay more for a better hotel.

“Watch the minibar!!!”

New Hotel La Baume

15 Sep 2007

Breakfast very limited choice, poor value for money, so we only had it on the first day.

No Tea and Coffee in the room, I though that this was a requirement for 3 stars??

The Staff were OK, no encouragement from them to understand our French.

Watch out and check you bill. On our return to the UK, we found that the hotel had charged us for using the Minibar. At check out we told the receptionist that we hadn’t used the Minibar as we hadn't. There is a spar at the end of the street for purchasing drinks at reasonable prices.

The Hotel was convenient and we like Nimes and the surrounding area. The shopping Halles/market at the end of the road had delicious patisseries and baguettes whcih were excellent value.

Interesting architecture.

Had to move rooms twice. First room unbelievably small, second room leaking sink.

Breakfast very limited and on the final day they ran out of orange juice. If breakfast only has a few components you'd expect them to ensure they've got stock of all the items.

If you like a Gothic looking staircase then this place is for you, otherwise you might find there are just too many compromises.

The hotels front door location is not good for un/loading in a very narrow street. Car parking is in the multistory 6 minutes away 8 Euro per day. The rooms were very clean and comfortable. Hotel has loads of character, staff on reception are extremely pleasant. Breafast reasonable. Only just value for money if booked on internet offers.
