Nimes? Never heard of it. That is, until Ryanair offered free travel from Liverpool for the weekend. OK, plus charges and taxes, but the whole shabang only came to ninety quid including priority boarding. So, global warming on the back burner (in a manner of speaking) we decided to give it a try.
Brilliant! We like making rash decisions, you never quite know if they're gonna work or not. This one did. Great check-in, great flight, great town. Best of all, the Hotel La Baume! Quirky, stone built ex-merchants residence set in a quiet street right slap bang in the middle of town! As with many of these place in France they don't look much on the outside but the interiors are always a pleasant surprise. Largely untouched and still sporting original features the La Baume is a step back in time, full of character and twisty turns. An unusual atrium provides natural light to all the four floors and stone stairs lead to small carpeted corridors and bedrooms. You get yer basic French chambre with shuttered window, en-suite bathroom, TV, mini bar, but cool without the buzz of air-con. Breakfast in the morning is fresh bread, fresh meats, fresh fruit. Don't ask for a full English will you? Bacon and eggs in the sunshine? Yechh!
One final thing, if you must bring a car you'll need to park underground about three or four minutes safe easy walk away.
We'll go back, no danger.
